Sportsman 570 “dusted”

I purchased a 2014 Sportsman 570 EPS ATV new in ’14 (along with a Polaris winch, Polaris Glacier Pro plow setup, and many other Polaris extras). Spent in the neighborhood of $8k on everything, said and done. I used the machine primarily to plow my driveway in the winter, and rode it a total of 4-5 times on trails. Never took it mudding, and had plans to keep it forever. The machine was maintained WELL IN EXCESS of Polaris recommendations, using Polaris oem parts. At 60 hours, and 500 miles, I experienced a hard starting problem. Immediately trailered it and brought it to my local dealer who informed me that the motor had ingested dirt and needed to be replaced as it was totally destroyed. They were not able to give me any explanation as to how dirt was able to bypass an OEM Polaris filter. However to their credit, they were (and continue to be) very patient and willing to show me the disassembled motor. Upon seeing it on the bench, the jug is definitely destroyed, and it appears dirt went through the bottom end as well.

So, upon seeing that, we talked options. They suggested I reach out to Polaris customer service, and speak with someone there. I told the dealer that I was holding no hope for Polaris to help, and that I had heard nothing but horror stories about their customer service. They advised me that they would attempt to make a goodwill plea to Polaris on their end. We agreed to touch base with each other as things developed over time. I asked the tech to explain to me how, other than the factory, OEM filter failing, dirt would enter my motor. He was not able to give me a logical explanation. And as a mechanically inclined 40 year old male who has been wrenching most of his life, I am unable to come up with one either. All signs point to filter failure.

So, I contacted Polaris customer service and was promptly told, and reminded several times over the course of a 5 minute phone call that the machine was not under warranty. However, I was advised that a case had already been opened by the dealer and that a service tech would be contacting the dealer.

Today, after several weeks, I was contacted by the dealer and informed that Polaris "will not be helping or assisting in any way, shape or form" as the Atv has ingested dirt and is out of warranty. However they offered me no additional explanation or reasoning as to how dirt or dust was able to bypass an OEM, Polaris filter and pre-filter sleeve.

NOBODY TO DATE HAS OFFERED ME AN EXPLANATION AS TO HOW DIRT WAS ABLE TO BYPASS A FACTORY FILTER.

I do not abuse the machine. I over-maintain it. I still owe in excess of $3,000 on what is now essentially a paper weight. I have bee quoted a price of over $4,000 for a replacement long block motor. I am a husband and father, who really took a leap in even spending this sort of money on myself in the first place. I am completely disgusted. The scariest part about this is that just prior to the incident, I was considering purchasing an 850SP and relegating the 570 strictly to plow duty at home.

I will never purchase another Polaris product as long as I live. I will, however, take every opportunity to spread my story in order to hopefully save an unwitting, unsuspecting person from a potential several thousand dollar loss. I do not know many people who can afford to throw their hard earned money away; I certainly cannot.

Polaris Industries does not care about the customer. If you are a reasonable, sensible adult who is in the market for an ATV, you absolutely owe it to yourself to explore other manufacturers. Hate to see myself type that last line. But it is what it is. I waited over a month to see this play out, before even coming onto the forum. I enjoyed the machine for a few miles. This one has been hard to eat….

XMR 850 vs XMR 1000

hey guys, I’m currently looking into the XMR 850 or a XMR 1000. 2016 models. I recently sold my 2013 Sportsman 850XP with 28" Kenda HTR’s on it. I liked it and it did very well for me, however it gave me a few problems that I got tired of. The TPS was always giving me a check engine light as it would never go off even with it adjusted properly and had starter problems. I’ve always liked the XMR’s so I think it’s time to go for it.

I’ve been reading and concerned if the 850 XMR lacks some power? Will I be happy with the 850 or will I wish I went with the 1000? My other concern is the clutch. Everything I’m seeing says the stock clutch is crap and it needs upgraded? Is that true for 2016 or just previous years? I’d hate to buy a brand new XMR to have to upgrade it immediately to enjoy it!

I favor the XMR due to from what I’ve seen on the trail, as it trail rides great too! Not that we ride tight technical trails as I’m sure it doesn’t turn like a standard outlander would but it’s nice to ride some trails too. Got to get to the mud sometimes! A place we ride at in PA has some nice smooth trails to ride before you get to the deep stuff to play in! Seen a few out on the trails and they ride just like we do so can’t be that bad! I avoid rocks, I hate rocks.

I’ll be honest….I did look at the highlifter edition 850 and 1000 too. However….I think I favor the XMR’s more. I’ve heard they suck on trails if need be and the turning radius sucks on them! Plus the damn orange paint job is UGLY.

What’s your guy’s opinion? 850 vs 1000 XMR? Any major issues I should look into or scare me away? Hope to make the switch with the help from you guys! Thanks

2003 honda Rancher trx350 footbrake stuck

Hi guys on my 03 trx350 my foot brake is stuck! I took off everything that’s holding it on and it wont slide off the pivot arm so is it worth fixing or should I just try to use my hand brake? the hand brake was real lose feeling before and even holding it in it wouldn’t slow the 4 wheeler down and I need some kinda brakes on It fronts not working eather. The backs has brand new pads they just suck kinda reminds u of a bycycle that used brake pads when u change them out they never worked as good as they did from the factory

The $600 project Rancher 400AT

Hi All. It may not look like it now, but this is a 2004 TRX400GA4. This was a farm vehicle used by an old man and his family around the farm and ponds.

Of course, the first thing I did was find this forum and download the owners and service manual. Thank you for posting those!

The bodywork is all there but one of the plastic flares is busted up. It’s all in pretty rough shape but it’s all there. I can order another flare. The racks are there but in need of paint. All of the emblems are long gone. The tires are there but in dire need of replacement. The wheels are bent up so those will likely be replaced. The frame has a good bit of surface rust which I will likely touch up before putting the body back on.

As you can see, this is where I’m at at the moment. I took the body off and washed the first layer of mud off. All fluids have been drained and the oil filter removed. I have taken apart all of the electrical connectors and cleaned with Caig’s DeOxit. Put them back together with a dab of silicone grease. All lights work as does the display.

The rear brake was holding when the front lever was used. I took the cable off and lubed it and adjusted the brake and took care of that problem. Other than that the brakes are good. The steering had an obnoxious squeal so I took the top bushing out, cleaned the bushing and shaft, coated it with lithium grease, and replaced it. Torqued to 24.5 Ft.lbs. and smooth and quiet now. All of the ball joints and steering joints seem tight and there’s no play or lost motion.

It runs like a top. Starts as soon as you press the button and idles very quiet and smooth. The transmission doesn’t seem to work properly but it was about 2.5 quarts low in oil when I bought it and what was in there looked pretty thin and nasty. It looks like there is an oil leak at the rear of the motor where the pull cord is. The air filter was, believe it or not, very clean. I am getting a 12 blink error which is the ECM motor driver circuit. Hopefully oil and the clean connectors will fix that. About to go out and adjust the valves and clean the pan under the tank.

In the next few weeks I’ll get the rubber hoses replaced and take the brakes apart. Check further in to that oil leak. Fill with fluids and hope that fixes the ecm motor error. Get some tires and wheels and go from there. I’ll try to update this as I go along.

Thanks for the help!! Now for the obligatory pics:-)

2001 trx450s

I am new to the atv repair game as a found a solid project on CL. I picked up 2001 foreman 450s for 650$ said that it had sat along time had carb issues wasn’t hundred percent sure all that was wrong with said got off an old rich farmer who checked his cows with it started acting up parked went and bought a brand new one. Must be nice he it wouldn’t run right took it to a guy to fix it never happened so he just wanted his money back on it. So at 650 I was willing to take a chance. I’m hoping you guys can give me some good advice and it will be much appreciated. I am handy with a wrench but by no means a mechanic. Look forward to being apart of this group everything I have read so far has been great. I bought some land and need a work /utility quad to help my back out alot of brush downed trees. I am in the process of going thru it right now have some questions you guys I’m hoping can shed some light on. Thanks for having me
I’m going to cover everything I’ve done. Clean out out tank with gas. Replaced filter and fuel lines. Had to order new seal dust cover connecting boot and air duct for air box all was missing when I got it. Changed oil and filter. Took the carb apart once thought I cleaned it good wasn’t the case was running way way lean was 2.5 turns out like manual said but was idling way high. And was getting hot quick so did some reading went back in clean carb extensively.
Decided to get a k&n so ordered a sigma 6 jet kit put in the 132.5 main and moved the snap ring down notch like it said to do set it at 2.25 like it said to put it back together and is running what seems to me really good.
Alot of power starts immediately not poppin so then I notice smoking from the leak from valve cover ordered gasket but not sure on torque spec the manual says 6mm flange bolt but it’s a 10 mm head which isn’t listed in the manual gonna tackle that today I hope sorry to ramble but that’s the summary

Things that I have noticed that needs fixed 1. vacuum lines they look like dry rotted and cracked from hydraulic brakes
2. Valve cover leak there was alot of build up around that area I scraped off with putty knife.
3. Front right cv joint wrapped wire around it destroyed boot.
4.the fuel pitcock Wil not stop the gas when turn gas off

I’m gonna post some pics any input would be appreciated thanks guys
