2000 scrambler 400 4×4 engine build

So I am looking for recommendations as to what to do with our scrambler 400 build. I got a quote to build an engine for my sons ATV from RCR at just over $3000 for a 446cc big bore stroker with all the trimmings. It will cost right around $2000 to do a complete "stock" rebuild with clutching and pipe kit. In your opinion is it worth the extra $1K for the 75cc and double the power. I’m leaning in one direction already but looking for opinion. This is a "what would you do" kind of question. Thanks in advance.

Hello From Levittown Pa

Hello all Been digging through the pages new to the forum I have a 2002 Polaris Scrambler 500 4X4 Bought it a few months ago been trying to repair some of the issues , Replaced both wheel hub seals damn them things are pricey!! Talk about supply and demand!

I drained the front hub changed the fluid
also did an oil change ..
I drained the tranny fluid and according to the manual i downloaded it took 32 oz Well i couldnt get 32 in it i could only get 22oz and i stuck a Q-tip down in the hole and it showed about a half inch on it , 25 oz would be over flowing out the hole , i even drained it and re did it same results according to the instructions from the threads to the bottom where the oil should be is 1 5/8 from the top , I should have measured what i took out but figured what if it was low cant win LOL anyone who has some experience give me a shoot please just so i know im not gona burn the trans up ..

Also put a new pull cord assembly just in case .

I put in a new temp light , and im gona get the steel water pump propeller for safe measures ..

Put new inner tie rod and outer tie rod , probably gona do the others as well since they still have a little play the other ones where so bad i didnt notice the other one has a little play …

Moving forward im probably going to change the chain and sprockets , and try and get a good tire for when winter comes as this will be most of the time it will be ridden so if anyone has tire they like for the snow give me a buzz and i can check it out ,

Still have to take at look at the drive belt most likely change that also

The front rims are aluminum might grab a set for the back also since it has the steel ..

One thing at a time of course ..

Anyways thats whats been going on with mine dont know much about these first one i ever had so will be leaning on the pros for some advice im sure, Thanks for having me here !
Jim.

Here are my new Tires & Wheels on my 2016 SE

I liked the wheels that came with the SE but Yamaha doesn’t say much about them like their strength rating. Since I wanted new tires I thought I would get new wheels too and sell the OEM tires and wheels as a set.

It worked out real well. The new wheels are STI HD6 rated to 1000 lbs and lifetime warranty. The new tires are Kenda Bear Claw HTR’s which I like on my Renegade 500. I sold the old tires and wheels for $575 and bought the new set for $700 delivered.

A petty thing I like about Kendra’s vs Maxxis is Kendra’s label is in relatively fine print compared to the huge MAXXIS stamped on Maxxis Big Horns.

decompression lever stuck

having a heck of a time getting my 550 to start, it only starts if i shoot starter fluid into the air box.

someone suggested to me today to check my decompresison pin. I wasn’t able to move the lever at all, it was completely frozen.

I took the 2 bolts out and removed the decompression assembly, but the pin fell into the camshaft. so now i have to figure out how to get it out. i’m guessing i have to pull the cam out to find the pin?

anyone ever have this lever be seized? and what sypmotoms did it cause?

Visco Lok is better than AWD?

OK, so my thread title is a bit sarcastic. I was watching a video on YouTube on a test between a Sportsman 570 and an Outlander 570, 2015 models I believe. It was actually a pretty decent test with several riders giving their opinions in a variety of categories. However the one that I found most interesting was the 4wd opinions. Each of the riders except for 1, I think, preferred the Vico Lok system of the Can Am over the AWD of the Polaris.

I’ve never heard that from any one before. In fact, I thought Polaris’ AWD was generally accepted as one of the best 4wd systems of any of the ATVs.

I’ve seen my wife’s brother-in-law go through 2 different things on his Sportsman 400 HO that I got stuck in on my Outlander 500, but then again on our last ride I went through something that he got stuck in.

Valve Check @ 50 hours (1000 miles) Extreme Conditions

For those of you in the mud and dusty conditions are you really checking your valve clearance this frequently?

I purchased 2 Outlanders in Feb and March of this year. Both are already due for valve checks at 65 hours and 1045 miles. I can understand getting the first valve clearance check/adjustment as required due to valves seating and getting tight.

I have more trips planned this year and I can’t for the life of me see checking my valve clearances again this year in another 50 hours or 1000 miles.

I come from a motorcycle background of which I have no valve checks due until 25,000 miles.

Is the ATV (can am) world overkill, or is this necessary as they require frequent adjustments?
