New to forum From PA

Hey folks who read this newbie thread… probably mostly mods I’m guessing. I’m Mike, I’ve been riding anything with a motor and wheels since I was a kid as much as I could get away with it. I’ve been riding a dual sport for about 15 years on the highways and light off road and have always wanted a quad since my neighbor got an old 4×4 honda when I was little. I just finally got my first quad as a steal of a deal on facebook (surprising, I know).

Picked up a 2003 Kodiak that had been dissassembled, had the front clutch pulley pulled off it, zero bolts holding any plastics anywhere (literally), radiator not connected or mounted, just sitting there in the frame, some stripped wires, it had been hotwired with a switch, plastics crappily repainted and peeled/marked/scarred, slightly bent lower A-arm, etc. I managed to see through all that and before buying I put a shot of ether through the air box, put a jump pack to the disconnected battery wires and it immediately tried to run, so I put a little gas in the tank and it immediately idled nice and tried to move even without the outer clutch disk installed! So I had to buy it. I figured a running motor and trans was worth $400! without even including the 4 extra 80% tread tires included with the originals, the paintable plastics, etc.

I took an afternoon and poured over it for everything wrong I could find and made a 2 page list of little things, most of which were nuts and bolts (literally missing nuts and bolts, i think someone stole the hardware to fix another bike?) and only found the following issues of substance. Bad front wheel bearings, needs a battery, a dripping petcock, no rear brake function (seems maybe the cables are too stretched?), the bent tie rod, a few worn bushings, a pitnum arm with a bit of play, no reverse, bad front shocks, and it appears the temp sensor is disconnected and that the connector for the 2 wires going to the sensor was actually ripped off? I still rode it withing 45 minute of testing in forward only by regreasing the outer pulley and reassembling it. The clutch has wear marks from being driven dry/ungreased but it moves nicely regreased and will burn out in loose gravel.

A small adjustment to the rod fixed reverse (the only non-functioning thing that scared me in the slightest). Now for $400 I own a worked 4×4 400 kodiak that starts immediately, idles nice, works in forward and reverse and scoots around pretty good despite the bad clutch. Ill replace it but wanted to test things further before committing real money to my project! The radiator gets hot so the coolant is cycling, but the fan doesn’t come on presumably because of the temp sensor being disconnected.

Joined the forum to get advise from the guys that already know on some of the issues. Looking forward to being a part of another community (already on KTM Talk, thumper talk, and Kawasaki forums)

New Forum member, New to me Sportsman 800 EFI

Always been wanting on of these machines…… finally came upon a deal (I think?) Found a 2006 Sportsman 800 EFI 97 Hrs 611 mi that the guy bought new and was using to go to his mailbox and back after knee/hip surgery that he really never healed from. Its been kept in his garage since new. He decided to move to Tx and wanted to sell it. Its black and silver don’t have a scratch on it, has a 19" windshield, Waren winch with remote control, 42" snow plow bought in Mar 2016 used 1 time, front box w/rack extender, rear Polaris storage box, rear rack extender, front and rear brush guards, new dealer battery installed 7-16, just serviced by his local dealer all fluids changed 7-16, original tires still look new, has all the original paperwork from new, a cd manual, operators manual, and all dealer service work receipts. He was asking 3K for it and we settled at $2800. I have since taken off some of the side covers, took front rack off, and gave it a real close look and I don’t think it has ever been in mud! Brakes and rotors look new, no groves on rotors. I have had it now a month have put about 14 hours on it and it still feels NEW. I cant find a thing that needs fixing or repair. Only thing I have done to it was add a LED light bar to the front. I plan to use it on my out west hunts this upcoming fall season.

How do you post pictures?

sputtering 500 EFI

Took my 2006 Sportsman X2 EFI out (on a very wet trail) and had to tow it back. It will still start and idle, but when I squeeze the throttle it will sputter, sometimes stalls, or sometimes gets going then sputters. Its very unpredictable, I could ride 5 metres or 500 metres, but generally sputters and eventually willl stall. I then start it up and go again.

I let the quad dry out for 2 full days thinking something might be wet, but no change.

I followed the service manual to see if any codes. The check engine light is not on, but it seems like the turn the key 3 times quickly trick does nothing.

Any ideas on where to start?

Grizz 450 & 700 Interchangeable CVT Parts ?

OK CVT gurus, I swore I was done doing dumb sh*t to my grizz, especially in the CVT area, but apparently that was a lie and I have a question.

I’m taking my 27" Blackwater Evo’s off my ’14 700 and plan on putting them on the wife’s ’14 450. I’m putting a set of 30" mudder Inlaws on 14" ITP Tornadoes and plan on taking the purple spring out and replacing it with a gold spring. Are the CVT components between the 700 ad 450 Interchangeable? The reason I was wondering is I wanted to put a stiffer spring in the 450 and possibly some shims. Idk what the spring tension is for the 450. I was looking at either putting my stock 700 spring or possibly the purple spring in hers along with my 1mm shim. She’s not a super aggressive rider, but at very minimum wanted to do the spring for her. Thanks in advance for the info.

ATV trails in Minn?

New to ATV’ing but looking for a 2 or 3 day outing and have come up with the Moose and Red Dot trails up by Silver Bay/Two Harbors, probably late Sept.

Would like to see some trail challenges, but these are stock machines and the wife and I are retired so nothing we need to get to crazy with, but rather not go down some of the trails I can drive my pick up truck down, 🙂

I’ve heard good things about the Moose trails but never been there.

These sound good or are there other places you might suggest?
We live in the Twin Cities.

TIA

Bead leak help

I have Bearclaw HTR’s on DPS rims that have been leaking around the rims since new (3years ago). Tires were sealed at least three times by dealer over this period and all but one keeping air for more than a day. Last time was two weeks ago and they were flat next morning… Tired of inflating all the time. Should I try to slime them before going to last resort of putting a tube? Any other suggestions?

Thanks for your help.
