Shuts down after 15 minutes

Just picked up a used TRX300FW. Starts fine and all but seems to want to shut down after 15 minutes or so. Let it sit for a bit and it’s fine again. Is this a overheating problem? Going to do a thorough tune up and check up. What can j do to make sure it’s running at peak? Thanks. JR

New to ATV world

Hey there. I just picked up a 1993 Honda TRX300FW in a trade for a horse trailer. Live in Ohio farm country. Getting used to driving the new toy. It goes faster than I thought it would. Anyway, might need a tune up or something. Wants to cut out after 15 minutes. Not sure if it’s temperature related or what. I can save that for the other forum. Thanks. JR

Oils & Fluids – “Thread of the Week”!

Well, I thought we were due for our "Oil & Fluids – Thread of the Week"….

So, maybe it’s been answered and I missed it (and where do you start with so many "Which Oil" threads)…. but my thoughts, concerns and questions are in regards to the alternate fluids people are using in both their Front Differential / Hilliard Clutch -and- the Rear Differential / Transmission Combo’s.

Now I know TXRonnie has many documented miles on multiple machines… of using the following:

– "Mobil1 Synthetic Motor Oil 5W20" in the Rear Differential / Transmission Combo

– "Mobil1 Synthetic Standard ATF Fluid" in the Front Differential / Hilliard Clutch

Now I also know Ronnie lives in a region (Texas) that doesn’t see the extreme cold temperatures (or at least for an extended period) and their "cold days" feel more like "shorts weather" to those in the upper Midwest and Canada But my question is this…. Has anyone in a "Northern Climate" region used these fluids in either of these systems with the same success that others in warmer regions have???

I recently reported that I swapped my 2005 & 2012 Sportsman’s over to these fluids, which I have…. but now am second guessing my choice with the concern questioned above. So if other colder regions have also used these same or similar flavors in their machines, please post your successes or issues!!

THANKS!

Where to mount the fuel controller

I know this has been discussed but I can’t find it . Where are you guys mounting or stashing your fuel controller? I’m installing a EJK.
I’m also installing clutches and see where some are using high temp anti-seize on the tranny output shaft. Is this commonly done on the primary side as well? Thanks for your input!

08 500 runnimg bad

I have a 2008 500 EFI it will run fine till up to operating temperature. Then it will sputter at low end and idle it will eventually stall at idle. I’m trying to get a service manual at this time but haven’t yet so any help with what and where to start would be great.
I’ve done a search here but no one seems to have the same issue as I do. Most seem to have WOT issue or idle. Mine is low end and idle. As long as i’m on and off the throttle it is fine. The issue shows up when trying to go slow around 10 miles an hour. Also at idle. It will sputter and sometimes backfire. Then as you give it throttle it clears up and runs fine.

**Leak Down Test Question** (400EX)

After fighting to get the 2000 400ex running I swapped Coils and bang it fired right up.. Smoking quite a bit though and was rebuilt prior to me taking it on trade and only couple hours max on it.. Valves were ticking pretty bad so I went ahead and readjusted valves to specs, they were way too loose.. Seems like some of the smoking went away but still does..

So I pulled the valve out of my compression gauge hose so I could put some air to it.. Lined all my timing marks up so I was TDC and put low air pressure 20psi, based on compressor regulator, and it definitely leaks out the exhaust..

So my question is with hearing the leaking air out the exhaust is that a Ring issue or Exhaust Valve seal issue?? If I rotate the engine thru the stroke and its off TDC you can hear it out the air box..

Thoughts?? I personally did not do the rebuild so can’t say for sure if rings were seated or installed correctly.. Doesn’t smoke like a chimney but still has more smoke than normal for 4 stroke.. Not so much at idle but when opening throttle..

Compression was 180 with throttle open and cold motor when I checked it earlier in week trying to figure out my problem why it wouldn’t start.. Ended up being weak coil..

07 Grizzly 400 issue and I’m lost…..

Hey guys new member on here so thanks for the add. So my buddy has a 2007 Grizzly 400 we went for a ride this past weekend and halfway through the trip his wheeler seemed to almost loose 3/4 of its power, we went through some deep water and mud so I figured he had gotten some of that good stuff in his cvt cover and it was messing with his primary, we ended up towing her back to the truck that day. So yesterday I pulled the cvt cover off and there was some dust both belt and sand/dirt so I used an air hose blew it all out and took it for a ride and the quad seemed to have little power and would top out at 18-20 mph and the primary looked like it would only engage 1/4 way or so. I brought it back pulled the primary and secondary off cleaned everything out replaced the ultramatic grease and buffed the shives, everything looks new now so it should work….. Well it’s still doing the same thing, I put it on a stand and in gear the primary runs all the way out just slowly, same in neutral, and with a load on it it only goes out that little bit the bike is not revving out either. Plug was replaced also and I ran a compression test it came out to 180 so at this point I’m stumped, could it be a wet clutch issue the diffs seem fine and oil is new and clean, the brakes are not sticking. And in 4×4 it’s even more of a dog any help would be appreciated. Thanks everyone….:gcrules:
