Hello. We’ve got the stock Carlisle 489’s on our Quad – Polaris Sportsman, 2006 450. Everything on the quad is stock.
I’ve been looking at the ITP Mud Lite XL’s – I see they are advertised as a pretty light-weight tire. This should be good as we have the smaller engine, (450), and we are re-using the original steel rims.
I’ve got a couple questions.
First, they do not come in the OEM size for the rear.
The front OEM stock size is 25 x 8 x 12. They have that.
For the rear, the stock size is 25 x 11 x 12.
The XL’s only come in either 25 x 10 x 12, or 25 x 12 x 12.
Not sure which one to pick.
The other questions is more general in nature.
I thought about upgrading to 26 x 9 x 12 front and 26 x 12 x 12 rear, but I keep reading messages about using spacers, offset rims, clearance issues, etc. Once I buy the tires, it’s too late if they don’t fit right. Can’t send them back once I install on rims (of course).
So I started wondering. Why does everyone want to increase the tire size in the first place? I understand it will give more clearance, but realiztically, a 26 vs 25" tire will only lift the vehicle a 1/2", right?
Just wondering. What are the other advantages of increasing tire size to the point that modifications need to be made? I’m very tempted to stay with the OEM sizes, and run the quad as designed.
Any thoughts?
And again, any thought on getting 25 x 12 x 12 for the rear? That’s a 1/2" wider inside and outside from stock. Seems like it would be ok, right?
HI. Does anyone know how to remove a stuck starter valve in the carburetor. The Choke cable has not been working. I had been just getting by. Now I want to overhaul the carburetor but I can’t seem to get that starter valve out. I ended up breaking the cable loose from it, then tried to use long nose pliers to pull and turn being careful not to damage the threads on the side. I sprayed deep creep hoping it might loosen but even the deep creep did not flow down. Does anyone have any suggestions. I have a new starter valve kit and a new choke cable along with a carburetor overhaul kit. Please help if you have any suggestions. Thanks for your time. I have a 2004 trx400fa. This is my first post. :icon_ peace:
Came with the JBS machined sheave kit I had installed, and drove less than 5 miles with these sliders in before I decided to install heavier sliders. $30 shipped to anyone in lower 48. PM if interested.
Help! I was riding my ATV and all of a sudden it putt-putted out and the rear axle jammed only allowing it to rotate in reverse. After a nice 2 mile push home, I now have it jacked up and about to begin the fun. Any tips, thoughts, ideas on what it may be?
Put a new caliper on my 2001 300ex and tried bleeding and can’t get them to bleed and build pressure.. I can get some fluid to trickle out after pumping pedal, cracking bleeder with pedal down but won’t build pressure.. Checked everything for leaks and nothing visible anywhere..
Fluid does get lower as I do get it to trickle out and I refill it..
Done many of brakes but missing something.. Would think if its sucking air it would show leaking fluid..
This was a purchase I made out of goodwill for some flakey pushy ungrateful redneck dreamer that couldn’t come up with the money. I’m looking for a working man with some merit to his life that would love a Super Magna and doesn’t need his sister to gather $2200 cash for a great bike.
The bike has only 16,000 miles and runs, shifts, and rides beautifully. It’s a 700cc V4 with a shaft drive, 6 speed tranny and all the gears are smooth as silk shifting and stay in gear until you click it into the next gear. I’ve never seen a cleaner 1987 anything. On Friday I’ll have the carbs synchronized and put some miles on it running fresh gas so there are no issues for the buyer and no worries. Fresh battery, oil change, extra filters, tank bag, and comes with a nice windshield.
The engine shines and the bike needs only a seat cover to really turn heads. Tires, fluids, and brakes are recently serviced as it was shipped to FL from Missouri with in the last year. $2200, no one will find a cleaner turn key bike anywhere. No payments, no free storage, no hassles. 🙂

Ok, so i’ve done some research, it seems the easiest way to clean the sheaves is with some steel wool and then some warm water and soap. If this isn’t a good idea then i’m open to suggestions for sure!!!
Also, when i took the side cover off and i look at my primary sheave it is shiny, it doesn’t look like there is any belt residue on it at all.
Should the sheave be shiney?
Right now there doesn’t seem to be any belt slippage at all, i’m just going through the grizz to make sure everything is in good working order!
Ok so what do you guys really think about the cooling effects of using royal purple. Do any of you guys use this oil? I think it’s pretty pricey where I’m at with it running about 17 bucks a quart. Totally worth it if the claims are true.
