On the Trail with Discount Tire -Rally on the Rocks 2016″ Cliff Hanger”

Friday our trail was Cliffhanger. As you might be able to tell by the name, this trail is not for the faint of heart. It is rated 8 because of the 1000 foot plus drop at the obstacle called Cliffhanger on the edge of a cliff where you have to climb down and then back up some bone jarring ledges. If you have a fear of heights you may not want to go on this trail.

Unfortunately for us we had some breakage on a few side by sides, plus there was another group blocking the trail at Cliffhanger so we were not able to go to the end of the trail. I heard more than one driver say they have not seen so much carnage on this trail before.

There were a few broken parts but with a group effort everyone was able to make it back to the trail head.

On the Trail with Discount Tire -Rally on the Rocks – “Moab Rim”

Thursday we ventured out to Moab Rim Trail. This is another of our favorite trails because there are a few fun challenges along with some fantastic views of the Colorado river below.

Right out of the gate there is a steep climb with a sheer drop that will test your nerves on the way to what is known as Devils Crack followed by the Z turn. Both of these obstacles help give this trail a 7 rating.

This is an in and out trail with a lunch stop at the edge of a cliff overlooking Moab with the LaSalle mountains as a backdrop.

On our way back as we neared the sand dunes one rider had his rear differential go out. The Discount Tire Team jumped into action. They took out his axle shafts so he could drive down the mountain in 2 wheel drive with a little help.

I heard the driver say "You guys were like a Nascar pit crew" as they disassembled his axles.

The Discount Tire crew never leaves a rider behind.

On the Trail with Discount Tire -Rally on the Rocks 2016″ Posion Spider

Wednesday we tackled Poison Spider Mesa Trail with some outstanding Rally on the Rocks folks. This trail is rated 7 but the scenery is a 10 plus in our books.

We were fortunate to have Cowboy as our Trail Guide because he not only knows all the trails like the back of his hand but he shares some interesting history of the area at each stop along the way.

One of our favorite lunch stops is Little Arch about half way through the trail. If you are not afraid of heights you can walk over to the edge of the arch for a breathtaking view of the Colorado River.

Most of the trail is scenic but there are some areas that will get you attention. Just ask your trail guide for a spot or opt out for a go around.

2016 Rancher steering light bar.

I’m new to the forum but not to ATV’s. I searched all over the net for a good write up on installing lighting on the steering column on a 2016 Rancher, to no avail. Here’s several pictures of what I ended up with, I’ll post more through the process on my second machine. To add clarity on the process. Turned out to be a good set up. Only thing I’d like to change is interlocking the light function with the ignition switch but, I’m unable to find a reliable wiring diagram.
Set up has 6 Phillips LED’s totaling 3000 lumins with an independent operating switch and relay.

Tread Lightly! Trail Restoration Project – Fins N Things

We were pleased to be a sponsor of the Tread Lightly! trail restoration project on Fins N Things trail. What better way to start of the Discount Tire Rally on the Rocks than to give back to our off-road community by helping keep our trails open for everyone.

This project was made possible thanks to the good people at Tread Lightly!, BLM, Discount Tire, Camp Chief, Arctic Cat, and Moab Tour Company.

Tread Lightly! is an awesome non-profit organization that helps keep public land open for responsible recreation.

Trail Restoration projects around Moab tend to work like this…. Tread Lightly! and BLM work together to locate areas on designated trails where the boundaries of the trail may not be clear. These areas often include out of bounds off shoots and sections of the trail that are gradually getting wider and wider. Its important to restore these areas and help guide people down the correct route to keep the area from getting abused and shut down to public access completely. Once identified, Tread Lightly! helps coordinate getting sponsors and volunteers to help cover labor and material costs and then the work gets done.

From an uneducated perspective it could appear that Tread Lightly!, the sponsors, volunteers and BLM are just trying to "put up fences to shut things down" but the reality is by helping guide people down the correct path they are effectively helping to keep public access to these incredible trails.

About Tread Lightly!

After our fence building project we took our Trail Support Trailer (which we used to carry a generator to supply power for the drills) to a secure location on the trail to cook lunch for all the amazing volunteers and sponsors that helped complete our restoration project.

With our hunger satisfied thanks to our Camp Chief grill everyone was given a raffle ticket for a chance to win one of Camp Chief’s famous outdoor grills. How cool is that.

The lucky winner was Woody from IH8mud.

With the project complete and our belly’s full it was time for us to hit the rest of Fins N Things trail to unwind after our hard work.

We would like to thank all the volunteers that helped make this project a blast. It is amazing to see so many people work together so well. Everyone was more then willing to pitch in.

We will see you on the next clean up project. Check out Tread Lightly!’s web site for a project near you.

Remember to Tread Lightly! and stay on the designated trail
