Wolf Pen Gap 2016

We’re back! We had a great time and got some decent riding in 9/15-18. We ended up with 2 1/2 days riding as it rained like crazy Sunday morning so we headed home early. For anyone thinking about a trip here, I have good news. I have posted before that the tree huggers have had their way and the interior trails are shut down part of the year. The remainder of the year, they will shut them down if it rains too much. Well, the head tree hugger who was in charge of shutting them down has retired. Nobody has really stepped up to fill the position so they don’t get closed much now.

All of our stuff ran great. The Grizz did die on me unexpectedly at a water crossing. I hit the crossing fairly hard and figured I sucked some steam into the intake. The water was nowhere near high enough to have entered the intake. After a couple restarts, it ran like a top again. Also, my left brake handle would go soft from time to time. I noticed it was usually after hitting a jump and getting a little air. The rzr did well also. I did notice (today) while taking my kids for a ride that the steering wheel is off a little. I’m thinking it has an alignment issue. I’ll get under there and check things over before I correct the alignment. I was supposed to ride with my wife on Sunday but unfortunately, it didn’t happen due to the weather. I guess the next day trip will be a rzr day for me.

I was hoping to get more riding in but we did get about 160 miles logged. I was hoping for about 250. I shot video pretty much the entire time we were out (2 and 3/4ish 64gig cards) and will get some posted up as soon as I can. I know that’s a lot of video to sort through but I did that on purpose as I’ll be off work for another 6 to 8 weeks after carpel tunnel surgery. I figured that would be a great opportunity to learn to edit video.

We also bought the Ozark Trail 72 qt cooler before we left. We gave it a workout on this trip. The jury is still out. They claim it holds ice for 9 days. Of course, we were in and out of it 30+ times a day and we had to add ice each day. I’m planning to test it full of ice in my warm garage and see if their claims are true. We’ll see.

Here’s some pics…

Leaving.

Acting as a counterweight for one of our friends. He was concerned about tipping.

This post may be a work in progress…. Several of my pics were taken on the action cam. More to come.

Tree stand suggestions.

Looking for portable treestand recommendations. I would like it to be easy and quiet to setup. I would be packing it in and out for each hunt. I use an older climbing stand, but it is noisy and clunky to get up in the tree. The farthest I would hike with it in my area is probably a 20 minute walk.

Thanks,

Jim

GBC Grim Reapers or Kenda Bearclaw HTR?

Up to 30 plus plugs in my stock Carlisle ACT radials on my 2012 Outlander 650 Max XTP. Tired of fighting flats so time for a tire upgrade.

Ride a mixture of everything terrain wise so looking for an all purpose tire besides a Maxxis Bighorn. Want a whisker more mud capability than a Bighorn provides but not a mud tire either. Ride lots of hardpack, gravel, and chips and dust mixes. Note: The Outlander max’s were still Gen 1 frames in 2012 so tierod clearance is more of a concern on the Gen 1 when trying to go oversize width on front with stock rims.

My machine is stock and I consider myself a fast/aggressive rider. I plan to keep the stock rims and not really interested in a clutch kit either. My Quad originally came with 26x8x12 and 26x10x12 factory but the Carlisles run short and are nowhere near that.

Been reading for days now: I think I have my choices narrowed down to two:
A) GBC Grim Reapers in 25x8x12 and 25x10x12 (I wish GBC’s did not run typically short. I like the rim guard and the tread pattern).
b) Kenda Bearclaw HTR (Lots of rave reviews on here. I like that these run oversize a bit expecially since I already going smaller than factory size at least by numbers anyway. Lack of rimguard and I less impressed with the tread pattern visually but my opinion is meaningless if it works good).

Help convince me one way or the other…..

Newbie 700 ranger TPS

Hello all just signed up. And yep you guessed it. Looking for some help. I have a 08 700 ranger and having the old TPS issue. Problem is I followed the long version. Set my TPS to .528 with butterfly closed cable disconnected and idle screw backed off. Adjusted idle screw so TPS was reading .660v. Readjusted pedal cable so I had full sweep to 3.6v and now it disent even run. Any thoughts ? Note. Kinda strange I had to turn the idle screw down 2 1/2 turns to get from .528 to .660. Unit is over fuelling and backfires. ?

2003 Kodiak 400 4×4 Radiator Fan issues…

When I got my quad the temp sensor on the radiator was connected to nothing, I’m guessing that 2 wires (red with black and another one) that had been stripped of plug are the wires that should connect there. I hooked them up the other day, but the fan never came on despite intentionally riding slowly up hill on a pretty hot muggy day.

1. How much do the fans typically run on these 400’s?
2. I don’t have a dash or dash lights so I don’t have an over-heating warning system so I want to fix this stat
3. Does anyone have a basic wiring diagram and know how the fan wiring is set up so I can trace it start to finish for problems and sort it out?

I know I can hook 12v up to the fan to test it, and that I can test the sensor for continuity when it’s hot, but since I don’t know the temp the bike is at or when that sensor should cut it, I’m a bit in the dark on trouble shooting the whole circuit.

Thanks in advance

New and in need of some direction

Hi. First time I’ve ever posted to a forum or anything like this. I have a 96 300 express. 2 stroke. I’ve removed the oiler and mix my own gas. It started running poorly a while back and my son told me that he had to have the choke on for it to run. Checked spark and it seemed fine. Wouldn’t start so I figured an old carb was having problems. Put a new plug and carb kit in it. I will only start if I have my hand over the inlet of the carb, then it dies. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Hard Starting 400 when warm…

Hey folks, just got a 03′ Kodiak 400 4×4. I haven’t gotten around to putting a fresh battery in it. but with the old dead one it usually pull starts just fine, but I noticed the other day that when I ride it a little, then shut it off, if I go to pull start it again it’s HORRIBLE… like rip my shoulder out of the socket, too much compression tight and basically impossible to re-pull start.

I’m wondering if this is typical of these or maybe if it’s indicative of a valve adjustment issue, or some other thing I should be aware of?

I am confident that the bike is in neutral, and it is not so bad to pull start when it’s been sitting overnight, just after it’s been ridden a bit. Thoughts?

Ground Clearance

Hello All, I just got back from my first big ride with my new machine on the Paiute trails in Utah. Before I went I set my sag up for Michigan(no rocks). I have my ’16 Renegade xxc set up for around 30% sag or 8" ground clearance with my weight. My problem was, that when in Utah my machine was running across rocks and boulders constantly on the bottom. My new Ricochet skids look like my 8 year old ones on my Grizzly. Is this normal or do you guys raise the preload all the way up to increase ground clearance when you know you’re going to be ridding in rocky terrain? I love the way the machine handles without rocks, just not while in rocks(kinda dangerous)!! Your thoughts??? Thanks in advance!!!!
