Grizzly 450 frame damage from plowing?

Hello all:

I have a 2014 grizzly 450 I use for plowing my driveway. My plowing rig is the warn provantage front mount. Last night, after I got done plowing, I noticed the frame members that the plow’s front mount bracket are attached to are starting to flatten where it meets the bracket (toward the lower part of bracket). They are not bent, just flattened. It looks as if the bottom of the bracket made an indent in the tube. The bottom U-bolts were also missing on one side and loose on the other. Top U-bolts are tight. It’s the same situation on both sides.

When I plow, sometimes the blade will catch on the ground (transition from pavement to grass) and trip the blade forward. This causes the machine to annoyingly jar and stop but I’m not going that fast when it happens and I would think the blade tripping would be enough safeguard from frame damage. Every time it happens I cringe and think about the forces transferring to the machine.

Anyone else notice this? Could it be from catching the ground? Too tight of U-bolts? I don’t remember this happening when I installed it. Should I worry? Is the blade tilted too far forward or rearward? I fear I may be damaging my frame. I feel like the "crushing" of the tubes have contributed to the loose / missing U-bolts… they could have vibrated loose but I’d think the upper bolts would have done this as well.

I just don’t want to continue plowing with it and risk it flattening that tube to the point of allowing it to bend.

Any help or insight would be great!

Thanks.

Power to solenoid, no power to starter

Hello all,

This is my first post, lot of good info on this site. I’m hoping someone can get me over the hump and tell me what I’m looking at. Started up my 2012 sportsman 500 HO automatic yesterday to plow, no problems. Tried to start it this morning to plow, just heard ‘click’. Lights/dash all have power, checked the voltage to the solenoid and it was fine, but none coming out when I turn the key. Thought maybe it was a safety switch of some kind, then I saw this when I was looking at the starter connection. That red boot is the starter connection. My question is what is that that broke off, some kind of ground connection? That housing is connected to a bracket which connects to the frame. I tried to touch them together and start it but still click. Can anyone tell me what that does and if it may be the source of my problem? Much appreciated!

’09 800 XT shutting off while plowing

Hi everyone,

My quad has been good in warm weather- no issues whatsoever. I purchased the quad used around a year ago to plow for winter but we really didn’t have one.

This time around we’ve finally got some plowable snow. The quad will not start in cold weather so I have to hook a tender to it ..no big deal as many do this.

So I started plowing today and within not even 30 mins of use the quad completly shut off in the middle of the driveway. I still have power but it will not fire up. My initial thought was that it overheated but I really don’t know. Voltage issue with the winch/plow? Drawing too much power? It was only about 3 inches of snow so I really wasn’t running it hard.

I let it sit for 20 mins and it fired up finally but then it did the same thing after only a few minutes this time. anyone have any Ideas?

Thanks

Hello from Lebanon

Hello everyone,

Messaging you from Lebanon after having lived for 8 years in Canada where I used to ride a Kawasaki Prairie 700.

I’m in the market for a 09+ Yamaha Grizzly (mainly 700 because I haven’t seen a single 550 here). I’ll mainly use it to go hunting and some off-roading, but nothing crazy.

I would import one from Canada/US, but there’s a flat $5k import fee in Lebanon so that’s not an option. I must buy from the local market. My budget is $7k max (including any needed work I would need to do on it initially).

The best finding so far within my budget is a 2009 Grizzly 700 FI Special Edition (RED) with 20,000 km (12,400 miles) and an asking price of $7k. However, I had my ATV mechanic friend inspect the machine and it needs a one-way bearing ($90), an outer and an inner joint ($230 + $230), an air filter ($20), and a new windshield ($230) [$800-1000 in total]. He said he could also smell some carbon so the spark plugs and injectors may need cleaning/replacement too. Anyway, we negotiated the seller down to $5.9k and he may even go as low as $5.5k when I show up with the cash, but I didn’t pull the trigger because I think that’s too much money for a 20,000 km machine.

As you can notice, parts here are much more expensive than North America.

Therefore, I don’t think I’m going to buy it, but I thought I would introduce myself and my search for a good Grizzly and ask you for tips and advice as I look into becoming a Grizzly owner.

Thank you in advance 🙂

Sold my Rancher, in the market for a new ride

Hey Everyone,
As some may know I had a Polaris rzr800sle sxs and traded with cash added for a 2007 Honda rancher 400AT. I was told by the owner at the time of the trade that it was a 420 rancher and due to my lack of knowledge on these Honda’s I traded because the machine was pretty clean and everything seemed to work good on it. Well I joined here and found out that I screwed up royally. I like to modify things with bigger wheels and tires, I use my atv to pull stuff(15cu trailers of wood, and dirt, lawn roller on my hilly property) and I quickly found out that the machine I traded for needed to be left stock, treated very gently, and if I overworked the trans I was in for a big repair bill. Some said not to worry, but all I do now when I use it is worry and wonder if I’m overworking the trans…. So I placed it for sale because I don’t want a machine that is a ticking time bomb, or that I have to worry about… The 1st guy that came gave a deposit and is picking it up later this week. Now I have around $4000 budget and I’m looking to buy another machine. I would prefer 500 or more cc, lower miles, and fuel injection… Now, I have heard nothing but good things about Honda, until I apparently traded for the only lemon Honda made :icon_ cry:. So I’m looking to the experts here to point me in the right direction please! I will be doing general trail riding and yard work mostly with it. So let me know what everyone thinks I should get…. I am also not opposed to another brand atv, I know this is a honda forum, but I’m sure some people have or have owned other brand atv’s. I’m going for the best bang for my buck really. Here are a few local options, maybe everyone can critique them for me.. Thanks!

2002 Sportsman 400 speedometer – dead needle

I recently acquired a used 2002 sportsman 400 and I’m in the process of fixing a few fairly minor issues. The good news is it starts right up and runs rather well.

The speedo was completely dead and roached out with rust so I purchased a new one. It lights up now and all appears well, but the needle doesn’t move when driving. Is there any reason to think this is anything beyond needing a new wheel speed sensor?

I’ve read there are some wiring tricks to these things to keep AWD working when the speedo quits, if the previous owner did any of that, would it kill the needle function on the replacement speedo? The only thing I notice that seems odd, is that there is an in-line fuse added near the CDI area, when I pull the fuse the speedo goes dark. It has two red/blk wires coming into the fuse, and 1 red/blk heading from the fuse up to the speedo. Additionally, the red/yellow wire from the regulator that has a single barrel connection to a red/yellow wire up to the speedo had been disconnected. Should that wire be plugged back in, or is that part of the AWD bypass that might have occurred? Or maybe it’s why the needle is dead? I just paid a small fortune for the speedo so I’m afraid of zapping it! 🙂

I might add that AWD did indeed work with the old roached speedo. I can’t believe it had any real functionality to it left, it was REALLY bad inside.

If anyone can shed any light on this I’d be very grateful. I’m inclined to buy a wheel speed sensor but don’t want to throw another wad of cash into something that I may not need.

Thank you!
