another issue burning oil

ok piece of crap 2014 850 has around 400 miles and is smoking bad and burning a lot of oil. never been sunk or anything like that. Im thinking rings are shot is there anything else on these hunks of junk that can cause this issue

850 xp le problems?

Hi im new to the forum got rid of my can ams and bought a lightly used pearl white 2014 850 xp sportsman. Are there any common problems that i should be looking for after i put some miles on it?

Installing Snorkel – Keep the Cargo Box???

Hey guys,

I was digging around and finding a little info, but I wanted to start a thread to see if I could compile a few thoughts from those of you with experience. I have a 2014 850 touring and I plan to put on – probably the Triangle ATV Riser Kit. I had a few main questions….

Is it worth it to even keep the cargo box up front or should I just switch to the front rack? It seems like it may be silly to keep the box….

Also, is the radiator relocate a must? How much does it affect line of sight while riding? All the more reason to remove the cargo box…

In my head, I’m thinking remove the cargo box, put on the regular front rack, snorkel it, and do the rad relo. Thanks in advance guys, look forward to your opinions! Pics certainly appreciated as well.

I was thinking of selling my 2012 850 XP LE and getting a new 1000 XP. Even though I have low miles and no issues, I was wanting a little more grunt and who doesn’t like new toys? After doing some quick math in my head it was going to cost me about $3,500 – $4,000 to make the change. I do not need the top end performance of the 1000, just more meat in the bottom to mid-range.

Instead, I did a complete maintenance of all the fluids, they all looked new when I drained them, and installed the iridium NGKs. Then ordered a clutch kit from RVS and 26" Bighorn originals. I’m limited to 26" tires where I hunt and these seem to run the largest of the 26" tires.

The clutch install was fairly simple and I used the 1/8 shim to bring my engagement up to about 2000 rpm. This gave me all the bottom end I was hoping to get with the 1000 to lift the front end over obstacles when needed. I should have the new tires mounted up by the weekend and take her for a real test ride. I’ll post up some pics and a review after the weekend.

front diff wont lock under heavy acceleration

well i found out this past weekend when i got into some very very deep mud that if i lightly get on the throttle i can get all 4 tires to spin. but when i wack the throttle to get some tire spin, the fronts will not move at all.
i did not have any warning lights come on or anything like that.
does the front diff actuator have a power limit?
are the black waters too heavy when in deep thick mud to keep that front diff locked?

Brake pads

I’m in need of new brake pads. I know EBC is the brand to get but it looks like they are awfully proud of those at $30 a wheel. Are the $20 complete set off eBay any good? Are there any to avoid?

Crankshaft problem.

What started this problem was I noticed oil coming from the breather into the headlight then I would be riding and once I let off the gas the quad would just die, but it would start right back up once I turned the key. I took it to the dealer and they said there is no thrust bearing in these engines to keep crank centered , it will eventually keep walking back and forth till it starts wearing into bearing and case. my flywheel was rubbing on oil pump cover and rear main seal was leaking into chamber between engine and trans. i have 700 miles on mine. Yes only 700 and its an 09. so what woul you guys do buy another 4500 dollar 850 engine, maybe get a 1000 engine?? or try and see if Polaris will cover some of it because it’s practically not even broke in yet. Or get a new Polaris possibly

Any “new” dusty ’14 550’s left at dealers?

I still really like my 550 and it has been quite solid with no issues. No heat related issues either.

Anyone seeing any old stock ’14 550’s at their dealers?

550 power is fine for my needs… just not feeling the 570 love and a pattern of heat issues that seem to be too common for my wallet comfort.

Any “new” dusty ’14 550’s left at dealers?
