New guy from NZ

Gidday I’m a new member from New Zealand. That’s right Team NZ from the America’s cup and the All Blacks etc.

I’ve only just found this forum. Nothing like this in NZ.

I’ve had a few Trx 300s over the years starting with a 2×4 and now have a 1999 4×4 Fourtrax.

Just need to work out how to post pictures, can someone steer me in the right direction.

Hello All! The in-laws have a 1985 Honda TRX125 that has been sitting up at least 15 years that I would like to get running again. I was told it was parked in running condition. What are the first steps to take before cranking for the first time in a long time? I have an idea but wanted some experienced advice before starting.

Downloaded the service manual and purchased a replacement carb I would like to bolt on before cranking along with a new spark plug. Also I drained the fuel tank and noticed some light rust inside. Was planning to get some fuel tank sealer to fix that. As far as the fluids, what should I replace out of the gate, just engine oil? Any else I am forgetting or unaware of? Also the throttle lever is frozen but I haven’t searched the forum for that.

Any advise, tips/tricks are welcomed!

New member from Fredericton, NB, Canada – Need ’98 TRX300FW advice

Hi everyone,

I am new to ATVs and recently bought my first machine. I wanted something cheap (as in not expensive), reliable and easy to work on when it did break down. I saw so much love in these forums for old TRX300FW’s that I decided to get one. Mine is a 1998 in Red. The seller advertised the bike as having "no issues", but on closer inspection the front brakes were shot, the rear brake pedal was snapped off, one of the front wheel bearings was in desperate need of replacement and it only had one working headlight. I bought it anyway.

Apparently the "rear end has been replaced", but it is hard to know what that means since the seller didn’t seem to be up on his maintenance. It apparently also has new rear brakes, though I won’t know that until I get them working again!

The wheel bearing I have already sorted out, and the front brakes are in such bad shape that I have ordered the disc conversion kit rather than try to refurbish the drums. I found a used rear brake pedal which I just haven’t had time to swap out yet, but what I am seeking some advice on is another matter.

I took the bike for a first ride yesterday (5kms or so through some moderate trails) once I got the front wheel bearing sorted, and towards the end of the ride I burned my foot on something that I didn’t think should get so hot. And I mean literally burned. It was hotter than the motor itself.

Any insights on this? I am not 100% sure what the part is (pic attached). I know it is part of the drive shaft linkage, but am not sure where it gets its lubrication from. I worry that it is either low on fluid, or running the wrong fluid at the moment to manage heat appropriately.

Hey from Texas

Just took possession (and therefore responsibility for fixing) a 1981 ATC 70 off family land where it has been sitting under a carport for a number of years. This is my first ATV so we’ll see how this goes.

New from GA

Just wanted to introduce myself. I don’t currently have a Honda atv, but I’m in the process of getting a new one and this seemed like a great place to get some answers that will hopefully help me decide. My first atv was a 98 Honda Recon 250 that I got when I was 12. My parents bought it brand new as a Christmas present for me. My friends all had atvs as well and we put them through everything we could find. I’ve since had a Yamaha Kodiak 400 and last year bought a Polaris RZR 570. The RZR is a blast and has been very reliable thus far. I just miss being on an atv and since my Dad wants the RZR for him and my Mom to ride trails, I figured it would be a good opportunity to get back on a Honda atv. Now to just decide which one!
