I am new to the ATV world. Joined a hunting club that requires an ATV because of terrain. Looked at many ATV’s and settled on a 2006 Honda Rancher 350 ES. The engine and electric shift worked fine, no engine smoke and ran great but needed lots of cosmetic cleanup. I grew up a shade tree mechanic working on my first car (’67 Camaro) but this is my first venture into the ATV world. I look forward to exchanging info to make my Honda rebuild project a success.

Hi! Happy to have found this forum and have lurked for some time. I’ve found the info to be very helpful.
I’ve just bought 2005 Honda Rancher TRX350T and have been working on it for 2 weeks. I just took it on it’s maiden voyage deer hunting with a friend. It ran perfectly, though I’m still working out minor details.

I replaced all the burned out light bulbs, replaced clips missing, repaired the accessory plug, adjusted and cleaned the breaks, swapped out filters and fluids, and removed/repainted the heavily rusted racks. Looks much better!

I need to research what kind of tires to eventually buy, and find a nice and simple gun rack for the front.

My biggest headache has been the reverse indicator light. The reverse indicator light on the panel isn’t lighting up, though the other 2 lights (neutral and the one at startup) do light up when turned on. It shifts fine with no issues and goes into forward and reverse. I swapped out the light bulb in the panel, but no luck. I checked the continuity from the bulb socket to the reverse actuator wire and it gave a good signal.
I haven’t been able to track the black wire yet, but thought maybe someone could point me in the right direction.

I’m from West Virgia, I like to tinker with just about anything that runs off gas,but not much when it comes to electric lol, I am currently tinkering on a 2013 Honda trx500fa,so it’s currently having an issue, it has electric shift buttons, an has shifter on side of the tank, should the electric shift buttons operate? Or just the hand shifter ? Cause the buttons do nothing when machine is on, but had shifter, works fine, any help is greatly appreciated ��

Hey everybody-

Im down here in Georgia…love being outdoors, but work limits how often I can make it out. I recently bought an ’07 Honda Rancher TRX420FM that had a little smoking issue. I checked prices and looked into things for a few weeks and decided to get this one…talked the guy down from 2400 to 1800. Albeit I knew it had a couple of issues.

Question is just regarding the work that the shop called me about today that they say it needs… Ive had good experiences with them for a Yamaha jet ski in the past and its really the only place to take something to with a problem that’s local. Ive got no reason to think anything other than what Im being told, but would just like any feedback or thoughts regarding what Im being told this atv needs as I don’t have a ton of knowledge or history with these.

For the smoke-(and I did read into this a decent amount)-it was a light blue, smoked in low gears and high gears if going slow. Smoked more in reverse…

I was told the whole top end would be replaced, and that they would not be "over boring" the current top end…

The brakes were non existent, I knew that much…I was told that it needed new brake shoes – front & rear, pads, hand brake & foot brake cables, piston seal & piston (for brake?) and steering knuckle assembly-wheels.
The price to fix these issues was $779

I know Im the 3rd owner of this rancher, and the previous guy rode it every weekend on trails, and told me It was smoking a little, and the brakes were out…which is all true. I assume he stored it outside and rode it fairly hard as some of the plastic is faded and a couple of fasteners holding the fenders are gone, a few cracks in the plastic…

Somewhere in the above prices quoted, an oil change and fluid replacement, air filter replacement are included.

Any thoughts on any of this are welcome!

Hi new to the honda foreman 500 fa that I just bought from a Craigslister that lied to me said that it just wouldn’t shift and had the clutch side case split so I couldn’t test it at all so I put it together the next day just so I could see what it did and when I started it I got a grinding noise so I tore it back apart and found the bearing in the case for the clutch side was shot so I found one in a book at work and put it in started it this time and no noise I put it in gear and hit the gas and it acts like the brakes are on so I decided I’d see if the gears would shift and they do and doing this I found that it will move fairly well in high gears with no noises really so I started searching around here on the net and found a manual and all the threads and that lead me to the oil pressure test and when I first start it the pressure is good about 30 at low end and 120 high so I decided to let it warm up just for the heck of it and sure enough it dropped about 15-20 psi and acts like it doesn’t want to Rev up to full throttle so I’m wondering if anyone has actually had a problem with there oil pump with low pressure or check valve without it screwing up the hondamatic and had these symptoms or has it only ended up being the tranny because I did not ride it before all this happen and the guy lied saying it was electrical I don’t know if it made noises ahead of time or not but it doesn’t grind or anything now when I move it so I’m not totally sure what to think or do really has anyone figured out away to test the check valve on the case because mine looks fine but I’m not sure if the spring is week and leaking or if the pump some how just got week any help would be great thanks in advance

Dying sometimes

I have a 1989 Fourtrax that I bought from my wifes’ grandfather. It has been a great machine except one thing. Sometimes when I put it in gear it automatically dies, not just sputters and dies but acts like something is shutting the key offf. I rebuilt the carberaetor, put a new fuel pump in it all to no avail. It does it when it is cold, hot, whenever really. Sometimes it goes for weeks without doing it and then other days I will not be able to ride it for several days. I have taken it to several different shops and of course they can never get the machine to do the problem, but they have no problem sending me a bill. After doing some research I have been playing with the clutch adjustment and think it somehow might be connected. It seems like their is a lot of knowledge floating around in here and if someone could throw some my way I would be much appreciated.
