New Member from Central Ohio

Hi all. I’m a new member from Central Ohio. Bought my first quad in August. I purchased a 2015 Honda Foreman 500 4×4 ES. Mostly purchased for trail riding and to have fun with the family. The attached pic was from my first trail ride at Wayne National Forest in Ohio.

new to the forum, getting ready to diagnose and rebuild what I think is a 1986 Honda 350. have owned the machine for about 20 yrs and the daughter ran it a little hot and now it will not fire. so I hope to rebuild to as good as new cause she was a beast. get ready I will be asking a few questions and looking for the knowledge and expertise of the board members.

thank you

G’day from Australia

Thought I’d kick off my life on the forum with an intro post.
I’ve been into motorcycles for over 40 years now and have owned a variety of machines both road and dirt. I spent 6 years racing road bikes in my 20’s and have built a few harleys since then.

Recently I purchased (well almost stole lol) a 1998 TRX300FW in the hope of restoring it to use for bowhunting.

It’s pretty messy and will need a bit of TLC, but the chassis is straight and it’s pretty much complete minus a seat and a muffler. The previous owner told me it had no spark and that’s about all the information I had.

I brought it home and set it up in the shed where it will stay as I go through the process of bringing it back to an acceptable condition.

So far I’ve torn it down to the chassis and engine and have spent a little time checking the wiring. I’d like to get it running at least before I dive into the running gear etc.

I found the no spark cause. The neutral and reverse plugs on the lower side of the case were around the wrong way. There could be something more to this as I was wondering why someone would do that??? I installed them correctly and now have a spark. I read though a number of threads here and have gone through the manual and checked all of the fault finding steps.

The next step I took was the fuel system. I stripped down the carb and cleaned it up and reinstalled. Checked all lines were clear, checked tank and petcock, put some fuel in and cranked…

hmm…

Did a bit more reading on the forum, checked timing, checked valve clearance. She still cranks away nicely but no bang.

Cleaned carby again… (noticed that she does overflow if I leave the petcock open)

Anyway, I guess I’ll keep reading through for more ideas as it’s sorta got me stumped at the moment. I didn’t really expect a single cylinder 300cc engine to be this tricky 😉

Some great info here, thanks

Adrian

Not riding much in Alaska

I have an 05 Rancher with electric shift. Over the past few winters it has given me trouble when it is below freezing. When it is cold outside the Neutral light will not come on so I can’t start it. I can shift into all gears including neutral but the light won’t come on. Once I have warmed up the entire machine above freezing the neutral light will come on. I don’t understand how the neutral light is related to the temperature. It is not a battery problem. I have also tried replacing the starter and neutral switch.

I will place this question General Maintenance section once I figure out how to do so.

Thanks,
Wes

ps. I have a small flower farm in Alaska. I need to use the ATV to plow what little snow we have on top of the flower beds to insulate them for the winter

Return to Honda ATVs — ’99 Recons

Hello from SoCal. Originally got into Honda ATVs back in in the 3-wheeler days starting with a 1983 200x for recreation & racing but eventually sold them all focusing on family. recently had an opportunity to pick up a coupe of fairly well used 1999 TRX250 Recons from a family friend and couldn’t pass them up. I know these aren’t the biggest, most powerful or sophisticated units but they are just what we were looking for in terms of reliable & easy to maneuver size for bopping around the mountain trails on our property in Utah and for day trip excursions in the SoCal desert.

Looking forward to getting back up to speed on the Honda ATVs.

Short-term looing to do general maintenance to get these bikes reliably trail ready and a few tires — think I’m about there on that. Then fix up/straighten up racks & bumpers as someone apparently did a little bumper car action with one of them at some point. Then will look into a few upgrades:
– addition of 12v charger
– might want to see if a way to add a gear indicator to wife’s bike (not good at remembering what gear she is in)
– maybe a few minor performance improvements

Looking forward to learning from and contributing to the forum.

Steve

New North Texas Member with a Classic

Hello all! New member here. I just acquired a 1984 TRX200 from a neighbor. I move portable buildings, and she needed a building moved, so a deal was struck. It had been sitting under a pole barn for a couple years, and had made quite a bird commode. A thorough wash, air in the tires, carb clean and gas, and she runs! I have a 5 and 2 year old, and we are really looking forward to fun times to come. It currently has no brakes, but rear brakes are in the process of being repaired. This is a new world for me, so I will definitely be looking for knowledge about the old dinosaur.
