I’ve spent a few months shopping for my first ATV and I’ve got it narrowed down between two models. I’ve got it down to these two simply because the dealer that I’d like to buy from has both brands. I’ve looked at other models and brands but the Honda/Polaris dealer has always been a great dealership and will stand behind whatever they sell for whatever issues may come up and would like to give them my business.
I know this is a Honda forum and thus expect everyone to say ‘get the Honda’ but I’d like to know WHY you guys love these little machines so much! They’re not as big or fast as the other guys but they seem popular.
I believe most of you will known it as the Rancher but us Canucks refer to it as the TRX 420 DCT/IRS/EPS. I like the Honda’s transmission, that new DCT is as good as a CVT in my opinion and I like the option to shift it manually. It rode very well, it’s light, and above all I trust Honda’s reputation of reliability. I drive a Ridgeline not because it’s the best truck but because mine has 105,000 miles without a hiccup. The rancher doesn’t have much in the way of onboard storage, no 12v outlet (only a $50), and it’s only got about 30 horses. But, I feel like that I couldn’t go wrong with a Honda! Even if it’s orange. Including set up and an installed winch I’d be looking at $11,200 including all taxes (remember, this is Canada. . . )
Many of my buddies seem to loathe Polaris for their poor reliability (such as my buddy’s best friends’ cousin had one and an engine blew up in two years etc.) and I must admit a part of my worries about buying one for that reason. I know the local dealer would be great for service but I’d hate to have to deal with that all the same. It has a rougher motor but that engine braking is great, it’s got 44 ponies to unleash, has great storage, a handlebar headlight, a 12v outlet, a good ride. For this model with a winch, set up, and 5 years of warrantee they want $9500 all in.
Most of my riding will be done in between 20-40 MPH in ditches and light trail use, perhaps a tad of mud, and light utility work. I had a test machine up to 30 (I think, it was 50km/h) and honestly that seemed about as fast as I’d want to go the vast majority of the time. There’s a market for 1000cc machines but that isn’t me.
My buddy’s got an 09 rancher 420 fm with 30" silverbacks and big gun exhaust that he bought used and its got a much snappier throttle response as compared to mine, meaning it takes very little throttle and it feels like the rearend wants to outrun the rest of the fourwheeler lol As far as we know, the pipe is the only performance mod it has (haven’t been in the engine to check for big bore and no fuel tuner either)
Mine is a 2013 420 fm with 28" silverbacks with a gear reduction but his had and still has a much snappier throttle as compared to mine before or after the gear reduction – heck even when I had smalled 26" or the stock tires as well.
He rarely has trouble turning those 30s in the mud as well, so what gives? Lol How come his seems so ready to run with barely touching the throttle? Does an exhaust really do that much power wise? At first I thought maybe a clutch kit was behind it but it actually seems quite the opposite when I think of how little throttle it takes to get his moving compared to mine where as I can heard and feel the slight delay/stall while rpms increase before the clutch grabs
I have a 2008 rancher 4×4 fm w/o power sleeting and have a bad engine . The cylinder needs to be bored out for a third time . And when we bored it out the second time and replaced the piston and ring cleaned out the bottom had , replaced the crank . But it was knocking and my mechanic said that the transmission shaft was bent . So now I am stuck between options : 1 … Bore out the cylinder for a third time/replace piston and rings then deal with transmission rod at the same time … Or …. 2… Buy a used engine off eBay and put it in … Sense I have to get a new engine can I buy a newer year engine like a 2012 4×4 engine w/o power steering …thanks
I have a trx420fe 2007 Honda rancher es. Was riding it all afternoon one weekend and everything was working fine but I shut it off for awhile and when I went to load it I turned the key on and had nothing, no lights, power or anything. It didn’t make any noises like the fuel pump kicking on ect… I checked all my fuses and connections and they are all good. I replaced every fuse and even the diode in the box and still changed nothing. While using a test light I discovered that half the fuses in my fuse box don’t have any power to them. So I used a jumper wire with an inline fuse and ran the wire to the fuses that didn’t have power. When I did this everything came back and worked. It doesn’t have a pull start that I have found either. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!
My 2009 420 fpa will not shift in to gear , the temp light is on and fan is going at all times , flat line instead of a N and blinking engine light .
Any ideas guys ?
One of my buddys was saying a sensor on the front diff ?
Need little bit of help. I have cleaned and replaced every part in my carb. I have set the air carb setting to where it should be. I can get the 4 wheeler started and it will run about 5 to 10 minutes then shuts off. I turn the air screw 1/4 of a turn it will start up a run for another 5 minutes. I can keep this up till the screw will not come out anymore. Does any one have any answers? Could it be the carburetor or something else.
I have a 2005 rancher 350 4×4 electric shift. I built the motor on it,got ready to start it and noticed that the gear indicator was flashing.Looked at the manual to see what was wrong.angle sensor was replaced stopped flashing. Before and now the gear indication on the meter will only read the gear if done manually.Replaced the ecu and still doing the same thing only only reads the gear if done manaully.electric shift will not work checked the motor.shift motor works.have done all i can.afraid the gear selector switch insid the motor is bad.
