An Out of Timing Rancher

Hello,

I have to say the Honda shop manual for a 2008 TRX420FE Rancher is less than helpful here. It’s pictures in Chapter Nine go from nothing straight to the front cover already removed and the chain exposed.

This engine on a bike belonging to my neighbor only has about 210 hours and 384 miles on it and was brought to me to fix. The engine had no compression, two bent valves and very slightly needed to be bored to the first oversize. The combustion chamber was very dirty and we thought the valves got stuck open because the spring could not close the valves due to grime in the valve guides. But now it appears that the engine jumped timing for some reason.

So the top end is all back on and I bump pulled the engine through in fifth gear and it binds up with the "F" mark visible through the inspection port. Fortunately, I was smart enough to not hit the starter button so I think the new valves should still be good . . . not bent.

First Question – Can I tip the front of the bike up and get to the timing chain by removing the front engine cover WITHOUT taking the entire motor out??? I’d really rather NOT yank this entire motor out if I don’t have to.

Second Question – must the cylinder be removed to remove the front cover? The book indicates that the cylinder needs to be removed but I cannot see why that should be necessary. The pictures and explanation in this book are not the best.

I’m headed to YouTube next to see if any of you have explained this better there.

Many thanks,

Rick

Honda 2014 Rancher Warranty Issues

I brought my 2014 Honda Rancher in because it was making a tapping noise. I first thought it was the valves needing adjusting so I bring it in to a Honda dealer close by and it wasn’t the valves. Come to find out the piston is scarred and there is a small chip missing from the piston. So they send in pictures to Honda and they claim it was caused by lack of lubrication possibly by installing the oil filter backwards. So the dealership gave me a number to call Honda and the guy that I spoke to says the same thing. I told him the engine never locked up or smoked etc. It still runs to this day. Then he tells me it was caused by normal wear and tear. The bike is 10 months old. The service manager from day one has been telling me that he doesn’t think the bike was abused or not taken care of and he is fighting to get this covered under warranty. My bike has been in the shop for two months now. So they investigate more and the district manager went to take a look at the bike and the dealer calls me today saying he denied the warranty also. I have three bikes presently. A 2014 250 Recon that I bought 4 months ago and a 2014 Rancher and a 2014 Foreman that I bought last year in August. Ive owned 5 Honda ATV’s total and I know how to install an oil filter and never abuse my bikes. I don’t know where to turn now. The dealer says the total to repair the bike is $2990.00 which includes a total rebuild. Not sure what to do now. I will not give up knowing that I didn’t install an oil filter backwards or caused a lack of lubrication on my part. I can’t believe I have to fight tooth and nail to get warranty work done. SMH

neutral light staying on

i recently purchased a 2004 400at. the guy that had it before me said that it was messing up shifting and the angle sensor was replaced. i got it home and within a half hour, the neutral light started cutting in and out. The next day it was on all the time. Later that day shifting issues began and went home in limp mode. im guessing that the angle sensor was not the issue. i replaced the beutral switch down by the shift motor. i noticed at the time that the rubber boots that cover the switches were all cracked, so i replaced that harness. Needless to say, that did not solve the issue, and i did not think it would. Im thinking electrical/wiring problem. ive noticed also that when i hit the rear brake lever the neutral light dimms slightly (when the bike is in drive). The issue dissappears every morning, but after it warms up the neutral light starts staying on again. The bike still drives and shifts as it should most of the time and sometimes the neutral light will go out for a while. The bike has not had the shifting issue since i replaced the harness and neutral switch, but i have only used it for a few minutes; therefore no error codes. Anyone have an idea where to start looking?

2010 rancher starting problems.

I have a 2010 rancher 420 that I have recently been having starting issues. When I turn my key on my lights on the instrument cluster all start blinking really fast and I can here the relay under the seat is clicking really fast. Then if I hit the start button sometimes it will start and sometimes won’t. If it starts it runs like normal but if I shut it off it still has the same problem. I replaced the relay and starter solenoid but it didn’t help. I also tried my neighbors battery from his rancher and it still does the same thing. Any other suggestions before I take it to the dealership.

2014 420 gear reduction

Im looking to do a reduction on a 420 4×4 sra manual shift and just wanted to make sure the secondary gear reduction is the same as the previous years. All the gear reductions im looking at say 07-13 and does not include 2014

Thanks
