99 foreman 450 es
This 99 has always had the backfire going downhill. I only take in to the mountains once/twice a year so it really hasn’t bothered me until now.
This year, while I’m sitting in a tree stand, I read a little bit about it and once I get home I decided I’m going to figure this out.
Now the bike did get rained on.
I start her up, drive her off the truck and put her in the garage. No issues.
I pull the seat and right side cover off and go to start her, NADA.
At this point I’m thinking
rain got into something
the 10 month old battery died
dead short
So where do I start?
Restoring my fathers 2001 Honda Foreman S
The machine replaced a wore out, 1993 Yamaha Big Bear.
At the time (when he purchased it), the machine was gently used, but I don’t recall how many hours or miles were on it. My mother confirmed that he paid $3,750 for the machine in 2001.
My father used the ATV (daily) on our family farm in Central, MN from 2001 until the day he passed away in the spring of 2006. From 2006 until now, the machine was maybe started a half dozen times a year and just used to run errands, spray weeds, etc. My mother didn’t feel very comfortable using the machine, so it pretty much just sat around. My dad used the machine much more when he as alive; feeding calves, checking crops, fixing fence, hauling feed, repairing equipment, etc.
I bought a new Polaris Ranger 570 for the farm, and I decided to bring the old Honda back to my house today. My son (15) and I are planning to renovate the old Honda workhorse.
The machine has 6,287 miles and 2,666 hours. Seems odd we only average 2 miles per hour on it. I guess dad just let it idle for quite a bit.
The machine is almost all original equipment. The seat is tore, the tires are awfully smoked. The grips are trashed. The racks/frame are a little rusty, but not too bad. The plastic is very dull and scratchy, but no cracks or tears. The machine starts kinda hard, but once it is running, it really runs good.
Well, I drove about 500 miles today, so a few more details (and photos) tomorrow. I have more questions, but will post them with a few more concerns tomorrow. thanks!
