Reverse Question

On my new wheeler (1990 300FW), it seems like the reverse cable or switch is broken or missing. Does anyone have a diagram of how the reverse mechanism is supposed to be? Right now I see an open ended cable hanging kind of down near the foot brake and there’s something with threads sticking out of the lower end of the engine. I imagine this is something to do with reverse but cannot find a definitive answer.

1990 TRX300FW Build

Coming from the car world I figure I would share some progress as I take my new wheeler on an adventure of restoration and functionality here so check for progress pictures and such and I gather parts and make things happen.

I picked up my 1990 TRX300FW on Tuesday June 30, 2015 in running condition for $700 needing some TLC across the board. It’s missing some parts of the plastics, battery, key start, and a few other odds and ends. Here’s a picture of it right after I picked it up….Attachment 24666

Tossed the wheeler in my truck and off I went to my shop to start digging into it! First off I will say that everything I’m doing is a process of both restoration and repair so that, as I make necessary repairs, I will be essentially restoring the beauty of the machine itself.

So far it looks like I need a new master cylinder and brake lines for the front brakes. The wheel cylinders still turn so I’m thinking they’re alright. I also ordered the Clymer repair manual first thing.

It needs a bunch if cleaning but as of now the overall plan is to get it all cleaned up nicely and then keep going through everything, front to back, and repair/restore where needed. Check out these pics in the next post….

87 Fourtrax new CDI, weak spark, still wont run

I bought this quad and it had a classic CDI problem, sometimes it just wouldnt start. Bought a different one off ebay and fired right up, worked fine for a couple times then all the sudden wouldnt start, No spark. Put the old CDI on and got some spark but it was intermittent and weak. The quad would sputter but would not start and run. What else can this problem be? What else to look at? Also can anyone tell me what the wires on the CDI go to? Thanks a bunch

Midlife crisis 300!!

Finally found a minty 1996 fourtrax, picking her up on Monday – will post pics. Can’t believe how good it looks, one owner, original tires, perfect plastic, might be too good to be true. Only strange thing to me is that it is a light brown color, our old one is red??

We had one of these growing up and put that thing thru hell and it still runs like a champ to this day, amazing. We used to ride it with three of us on it at once, we were climbing a steep hill and the front end climbed a sapling and it flipped end for end back down the hill a few times, landed on wheels still running.

Looking for upgrades already and found this forum, awesome resource.

Any suggestions for upgrades? Our old one has zero brakes, so there appears to be a disc brake conversion kit. It seems a 12" rim is needed.

There seems to be some 300 "masters" on this site.

1. Is there a disc brake kit conversion for front and back brakes or just front?
2. Where/what tire and rim combo should I buy? Not looking for super aggressive mud tires, or super fancy rims.

Thanks for your help!!!
