Hey new to the forums, working on rebuilding the front brakes on my 1988/89 Honda Foreman. Everyone please don’t be like me. Regularly maintain your brakes/drums because what I found after 15 years of neglect is sad.
That said, I’m looking for a little direction in regard to:
1.Dust seals/o-rings found in both the knuckle and the brake assembly.
Q: Should I replace all the o-rings/dust covers/seals to prevent water entering or will water continue to enter anyways?
Q: If I should, can anyone point me towards a kit instead of trying to read the diagrams and order the parts individually like I am now?
2.Front brake cylinders
Q: These dudes are completely corroded. What can I use to begin cleaning/dissolving the corrosion that won’t damage them further?
Q: Rebuild kit for the cylinders will work once I have properly cleaned them?
3.Brake drum
Q: These guys are super rusted/corroded. What is the correct way to clean up the drum so the pads will make good contact when I reinstall everything?
4.Future maintenance
Q: In the future what simple things should I be aware of or do to keep the front brakes in good shape….other than pull them completely apart? To specify what I mean, is there a method for draining these brakes if water enters, or checking for water, short of removing the wheels?
5. Pipe dreams…
Q: There isn’t a front disc brake conversion kit that fits this atv is there?
Thank you in advance. I look forward to being apart of the conversations here and hopefully I won’t be too lazy and I’ll get together a write-up with pictures for everyone on how to do the brakes.
Hey guys, I just broke out the old quad and now when I take it up steep hills it looses power, wheels don’t turn and it starts to die. Please help thanks a lot! 😡
I put a new OEM carb on my 2006 fourtrax 350tm last year. The reason I bought it was because the original one was leaking gas out the overflow. I put a couple of floats and needle valve in it, polished the seat, and still couldn’t get the thing to stop draining gas.
Now I have the same problem with the new carb. It sits over the summer, for the most part. I start it every time I mow the grass. Now its hunting season and I can’t get the stupid thing to stop leaking.
I pulled the float and valve today & cleaned REAL good… It seems like this is a design flaw. I’ve had many Honda four wheelers and three wheelers over the years and none have acted like this. Either the float isn’t buoyant enough, or something.
Please, is there a fix? An after market carb or anything?
Hi everyone ,
I need a new muffler on my 88 as a result of rust. The main pipe looks fine but the muffler is full of holes. I have read a few threads where people mention using a tractor muffler. Is that a viable option? If so, where would you cut the pipe from the muffler? What Specific adaptor would I use to join the pipe and muffler?
Do need to fabricate mounting brackets to hold muffler to frame?
I have a 1986 TRX 350. The engine runs fine. But occasionally, when I engage either First gear or Reverse, the engine dies. Immediately. I can restart it immediately, but the same thing happens. It runs fine, but as soon as a gear is engaged, it quits – just like turning off the key or hitting the kill switch. I’ve had it in the shop three times over the past years, and they’re as frustrated as I am. It doesn’t happen every time; maybe every 20th time or so that a gear is engaged. Frustrated!!
Hi everyone,
I just got a total basket case 1988 TRX300 4×4. The atv has seemingly been to hell and back, and dropped off a few cliffs along the way!
I am sure I will have many questions and threads going forward, but here is the first one.
I noticed yesterday while it was running, that at idle the headlights and dash lights are very bright. As soon as you hit the throttle and start riding, the lights dim, and they stay dim until the machine returns back to idle. This seems very strange, since in almost every other machine I have ever worked with, the exact opposite is true…idle=dim/throttle=bright. Any ideas? The machine does not have a battery at the moment, so I have been starting it with the kick starter. Could the lack of a battery cause this issue?
Hello. I’m a complete newby to ATVs- I joined up here for some advice on my first machine which is a 1989 Fourtrax 350. I have invested in a Fourtrax Cyclepedia manual to begin the learning curve of servicing the thing. Was running just fine when I got it a week ago and now it refuses to start. That’s not my immediate concern yet-I have a carb kit and a set of new filters coming in the mail, so I’ll begin with that.
The problem is it stalled in the driveway and I can seem to budge it. The green light indicates it’s in neutral but all the wheels seem locked up making it impossible to roll back to my drive shed to work on the engine. Is there something that disengages the drivetrain to make it roll (like the lever disengaging a lawn tractor?) Thanks in advance!
Hey gang – just picked up a 2008 foreman 500 – great bike. I have a manual shift and when I am shifting out of neutral it jumps a little, what is the proper method to set the idle? I am guessing the idle being a little high can cause this. I also have two screws coming from the carb I am guessing one is the idle which comes out the bottom, the other out the side (both knobs visible when I take the right side cover off)what is the other. I had a shop clean the carb and it had a bit of rough idle when I picked it up so I added some sea foam and have since run a tank of ethanol free gas so it idles smooth just to high I think.
