In-Dash iPad Air Mount

Here’s a different way to mount your iPad Air in your RZR 570. One of the uses for my RZR is for the local Search and Rescue Team (volunteer) for our local County Sheriff’s Dept. I wanted a way to have the trail maps on the iPad Air be front and center and easy to see. I’ve tried a few different mounts and even sat the iPad on the passenger seat, but none was really optimal for viewing or very convenient. Then I noticed this replacement dash/overlay in a RZR Forum post.

The add-on dash panel for the 570 is designed and fabricated by David Boehmer of Specialized UTV., and installs over the top of the stock RZR 570 dash. (There is some cutting of the stock dashboard that needs to be done, depending of the configuration of switches, toggles, gauges, etc.) The iPad mount (AIR-SL) comes from FiField Fabrications. The iPad mount allows the iPad to slide in and under the lip of the mount and is held in place by a spring loaded panel. The manufacturer offers several options.
David was very easy to work with. After taking a look at the sample dash panel on the Specialized UTV website, I provided David with a sketch of the switches, buttons, speedometer and iPad location, the color of the RZR and my selection for the type of dashboard faceplate.

From that sketch, David provided me with a snapshot of a sample dash. I ordered the iPad mount (AIR-SL) comes from FiField Fabrications and had them drop ship it directly to David. David acquired the rocker switches for me from Jim at OTRATTW.
David provided me with progress update photos for the week or so it took to fabricate and paint the new dash and face plate. We discussed the different lighted toggle switches for all of the planned accessories and David ordered the switches and had them preinstalled in the dash face plate. (It was great to be able to stay in the loop during the preparation work.)

Shipping took just a few days and arrived in great shape, all well-protected in bubble wrap. The paint job was absolutely perfect and it looked great out of the box and wrapping. All of the switch and instrument placements were perfect… right where I asked them to be, installed level and without any slop. While there wasn’t much in the way of installation instructions that arrived with the package, David let me know in advance that he would walk me through the installation process… which he did, providing many photos and text messages via smart-phone. (I’m a Tech Writer by trade and promised David I’d write up the step-by-step install instructions for him.)

Knowing I had to cut away some of the stock dash, I was in no rush to complete the job, and it took a few hours during the course of a week. I must say, the fit and finish of the new dash was better than I expected… there was no need to force anything into place, it fit perfectly. I used 4” masking tape to cover over the stock dash where it had to be cut away and then I traced the cut line with heavy black marker. (I would take photos with the iPhone and send them to David who would view and approve the progress.) I used a Dremel tool with a cutting blade to cut away the necessary portion of the stock dashboard. Once done, the new dash fit perfectly.

The rest of the time was spent doing the many small details or marking and drilling the mounting holes and wiring up all of the switches. I was ecstatic to find out that the speedometer/instrument cable and ignition cables were long enough to be re-routed to the new locations in the dash. (Thank you Polaris!)

I’ve taken quite a few photos of the installation process so I can document the installation steps with photos.

Now, I’m still looking for some type of dark plastic shroud/hood that I can add over the location for the iPad Air. But all-in-all, I’m really pleased with the outcome. Sure, there may be less costly solutions out there, but I liked the custom fit, permanent solution the best and I like that the iPad is held securely in-place and won’t come loose or vibrate on the rough trails.

Needing help

Ive been thinking about setting up a go fund me account to purchase a couple rzr800s to take physically handicap people like myself out riding at stoney lonesome or other parks to show them that there are still ways to get out and live life. Anyone have any other ideas i could do to raise money?
