Cognito Motorsports WINS – Blue Water Desert Challenge, 2015

Blue Water Desert Challenge, 2015
By Justin Lambert, #1918 Cognito Motorsports

We just came from a win at Vegas to Reno, and were feeling confident but were not trying to let it get away from us as that has happened before and bit us in the rear. We prepped the 1918 Polaris RZR XP 1000 right up until the last hour to make sure we were 100% ready for this race in Parker AZ. There has been a lot of controversy in the last few months about how Turbo cars have joined the Pro class, and the naturally aspirated (NA) cars are now at a power disadvantage. We are still running an NA car and knew that Parker was going to be a lot of soft terrain where that turbo power was going to shine, but there is always that chance of something going wrong and we had to make sure that wasn’t going to happen to us.

We drew 21st starting position out of 25 cars, and that was a bit disappointing since we are sitting 2nd in the points chase, and to get to the front we had to pass thru the dust of nearly 20 other UTV’s. The start is rows of 2 cars at a time side by side, and 30 seconds between every row. BWDC is 2 days of racing, 3 laps each day for a total of 150 miles, loops are right about 25 miles each, the total time for all miles determines finishing position. We took off in the 11th row, motored on the utv next to us and were off into the thick silty dust. We start this race so early in the morning that it’s still dark and there is no breeze to move the dust which just lingers in the air forever. Laps 1 and 2 of 3 were very dusty, driving nearly blind in several sections of the course, lap 3 was much cleaner air as we had passed many cars, but the course was getting really torn up. Day 1 went flawless for us, but also went flawless for some others and we ended up 3rd place, behind 2 turbo cars that we actually felt like we were slowly reeling in, which put us starting day 2 in third place and just over 2 minutes behind the leader.

Day 2 we started 2nd row, motored on the utv next to us back out into the dusty desert again. The course mostly was even rougher than the previous day with a few graded sections, and with such a short race, I call it the roughest drag race I have ever been in. We were experiencing cleaner air, as the traffic was behind us on day 2, we were on the pipe and got past the 2 turbo cars that started in front of us as they had some issues, we were up front but were not sure how close the competition was behind us, we knew there was a chance of someone from behind beating us on corrected time. We kept up our momentum and came across the finish first with time to spare, beating the next competitor by over 4 minutes on corrected time for both days. It felt great to back up our Vegas to Reno win with another victory at the Blue Water Desert Challenge.

Rain and roofs

Hi all.
I have a 2014 RZR 800 with a factory "Lock and Ride" poly roof. Because of the side cut outs on the roof, rain pours in, getting everything wet. (Yes, I can dig out my rain poncho, but that is a PIA as well.) I think the cut out is so one doesn’t bang his head getting in or out.
My question is I’m looking for a roof replacement that is wider and offers more coverage. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
John

Spare Nut & Bolt Kit

Most of my trail riding is solo so I over prepare and wanted to put together a kit of spare hardware.
I went to Rocky Mountain ATV and went through each OEM schematic and added the nuts and bolts to my cart. After removing duplicates (I purchased 2 of anything under $1) it added up to about $150.

I then went to Fastenal and added the items one by one, came to about $50 with shipping. The big savers are on the A-Arm bolts, about 50% of the cost. I made a few adjustments if an exact replacement wasn’t available, but all should work. A couple I had to switch from metric to imperial, but I feel confident that I will be able to make it home if I lose a nut or a bolt and I won’t have to search the trail looking for it.

Here is my list for a 2014 RZR 4 800.

Hey Mr. Insurance Man …

We were at Glamis North Resort, Niland, CA for their opening weekend and saw this beauty on the way out. I don’t know whole story behind it. Neighbor said it flipped over end over end. Looks like the after market cage saved the day. Also looks like a lot of custom graphics and accessories were on this RZR.

I noticed a lot of washes were washed out and still wet. be careful out there. Otherwise a quiet opening weekend with a little rain Thursday and Friday nights. Park is sold out for the next two weekends.

winch questions

Hi,
I’m new to RZR and new to this forum. I have a 2015 900 EPS Trail, just bought new.
I have been told that a winch is good to have. I have a few questions so I will ask them all here at once:
What size winch do I need?
What is a good brand that is less expensive than the Polaris/Warn? I’m in Canada so less choices. Champion and SuperWinch seem to be the most available here.
What size wire do I need to run from the battery to feed it?
Wouldn’t it make sense to have the winch mounted on the back? Then you could get back to where you were before you got stuck.

Thank’s for any advice.
Jeff

crunching sound coming from rear end (rzr not me) help please

Hi I am trying to pinpoint or try to figure out this crunching coming from the ass end of my 2014 RZR s with just under 1000 Kim’s on it. It seems to be coming from the drivers side rear and gets progressively worse as the day of riding goes on.

I’m aware of the brake issues and these crunching or metal clacking sounds are still audible with the brakes on. I also hear a similar sound when I rock the machine back and forth.

I checked the driveshaft as you will see in the video and it does have some movement but the sound seems to be segregated to either the wheel and bearing or differential.

Could you have a look at the videos and let me know if anyone has had to deal with this before and what the fix was please.

Starting problem

When turning the key to start my RZR you can hear the motor attempt to start and then it sounds like it bogs down and stops cranking. The positive terminal at the battery starts glowing orange. Replaced the starter several years ago with a SATV one. Pulled it back out and it spins freely. Gear that starter engages also spins freely. Sprayed bunch of lube in the hole let it set and stuck starter back in and still doing same thing. Whats going on in there? Is it time to pull the motor???
