First Oil Change 2014 Grizzly 700

I love my new grizzly!

Just had my first oil change (10 hours), and the dealer is claiming it took over 3 liters of oil…of course he charged me for 4 liters. I’m concerned, the manual calls for 2.10 liters. 30% more oil than the manufacturers spec, is this possible?

How about those older Polaris quads?

My buddy and I were riding last Friday when he gave me the lead on the trail. I run us down a fairly new looking trail that still has grass/weeds on it. Anyways, it turns left to a steep short down hill for about 20 yards, then drops off at around 80°. The other way is off camber and may be doable.

So I park the Grizz and get ready to scout ahead. He also parks and hops off. As we were marveling about the drop off and generally bullshitting, we hear twigs snapping. We turn to look and see the Polaris (actually, his wife’s Polaris ) rolling down the grade towards the drop off! He yells out and starts running that way and stops, realizing he can’t catch it.

The old 325 Polaris Magnum does this slow-motion dive over the drop and lands right on its front end. I then flips end over end and lands on its wheels.

He looks at me and just says "Shit."
"You’re taking this better that I would dude," I said.

He slides down the drop off while I ride back around. I’m thinking tow strap and back to the truck. Not him. I get down there and he’s off ripping down the dirt road.

The back rack was FUBAR, the front rack was buckled a little, and the bumper was bashed, but all else seems to be in good shape.

Tough little machine.

Next three Qs: Color, hitches, and winches

Welp here’s my next three questions to help get me into my first machine (looking to buy used btw)…

1) I’m hooked on the camo color scheme but don’t want to let that stop me from getting into a good bike. Say you had something like a red or green 2010 Grizz 550 and wanted to turn it camo. How would you go about that? Buy all the plastic off ebay and sell what comes off yours to recoup some of the cost? Or is there some kind of plastic or material cover you could get? Also, about how much would each route end up costing?

2) I’ve seen the back end of some machines that look like they’re just not set up to handle a hitch ball. Are there some machines that you can’t put a ball on at all, or are there aftermarket conversion kits made for every machine out there?

3) Same question for winches. I’ve seen some Grizz front ends that, either because of the molding or frame, just don’t look like they’d take a winch. Am I right, or will all bikes (or at lease all Grizzlys) be able to accept an aftermarket winch kit?

Thanks

Are you my daddy?

Got a letter yesterday from a lad searching for his father… today I called him…

Said he was 18 and his mother provided his fathers name to him on his birthdat along with some other info to help him find his birth father if he wanted.

First thought was "Oh Crap"…

Fathers name was mine, lived in Florida at the same time, was tall and well educated, etc, etc. Told me his mothers name, but I was a bit of a player back then, so couldnt remember if my life depended on it.

As we talked, Im thinking how the hell am I gonna explain this to the little lady.

Then he asked if I was "Very dark skinned" like his mother and himself. I said that I likely had a tan, living in south Florida and all, but was actually Scottish and Irish, so "Dark skinned" isn’t how I have ever been described before.

Then he started to laugh. He said that he was black, and asked if I was. I said no, kinda pink. Then we both laughed. His father was black as was his mother, as was himself.

Scared the hell out of me until we figured it out. We both laughed at the situation, and he said he was sorry for scaring me. I wished him well and good luck on his journey.

I’m not opening my mail or answering the phone anymore…

modular helmets

well, a recent thread about helmets has me thinking about modular helmets. what are you guys using as far as modular’s go?
important things to me are:
safety above all else. dot or snell req’d
flip up chin bar
GOOD ventilation
slide down sun shield/lens

a bonus would be that i would be able to add an electric shield and breath guard for winter.

not something that costs too much.

im currently leaning towards the gmax gm54s. there are a lot of great reviews out there, and it seems to have real good ventilation.
