Alright so the gears behind the stator cover were good, and the stator was good..
Pulled the left side engine cover off and come to see pieces of piston skirt sitting at the bottom of the crank case!
SOOO it’s motor removal time.. I work all weekend so next will be when I start the disassemble of the motor..
Any takers on what I’ll need to replace?? Since the piston is in pieces? And chime in on the performance mods I can do while the motor is out, without doing a bbk. I haven’t decided if I want that yet or stock rebuild.
My 2012 1000 XXC is giving me trouble getting the stock secondary back on. I threw a VFJ primary clutch on it.
The secondary is normally spread by threading that spreader bolt into the secondary clutch. Well, I threaded it in earlier and it worked perfect, had decent resistance, but nothing crazy.
Now, I try to spread the clutch with the spreader bolt and the bolt threads in perfectly by hand until it meets resistance, then its like it hit a brick wall. I’m afraid to horse on it, so I just let it sit. Is it normal for it to turn super hard to try and force the sheaves open? It never turned real hard before when i did this. I’m only using a 1/4 inch ratchet, but still….
Does the secondary sheaves have to go on any certain way? I see by the splines they appear that they could go on any 1 of 3 ways depending how you rotate the sheaves and line the splines up.
Quite the upgrade from my 2010 outty 840. Hopefully this one does the job! Will be getting a few more goodies and I’ll update you guys as I go. Including a custom rad relocate!
Ok, so my like my old thread said everything.. Motor is locked..
Anyway, I started tearing into it.. Here’s where I’m at..
1. I removed clutch cover, primary and secondary are in tact and good.
2. I removed the spark plugs, tired to turn it over, nothing, still locked.
3. I removed valve covers, to see if I broke the timing chain, or dropped a valve, front and rear cylinder chains were in tact and on the sprockets, all valves and springs were accounted for.
4. Oil is still purple looking from my last oil change.
5. I manually tried turning over motor, can only move so far forward or backward.
6. I then hit the start button, and the primary moved a small distance and would stop at the same point.
So here’s my thoughts so far, I’m missing one bolt that holds the starter on, so the loud chatter I heard while riding, I think could be the start bound up in a certain spot, or the stator came apart, or magnet fell and has the fly wheel locked up. I’ll be removing the stator cover tomorrow to check that.
While the plugs were out, felt for the Pistons, both were where they should be. Felt for movement when I manually tried to turn the motor over but it was a minute amount of movement.
Please chime in with thoughts.. Help from the gurus is always great, thanks!
I’m getting ready to install my VFJ Team Primary clutch and I’m struggling to get the stock primary clutch removed. I do have the kawasaki clutch puller that john suggested and its a nice strong tool. I ran it in with my air impact wrench on the lower 3 torque settings. I tried it a little bit on the highest torque setting on my impact wrench, but I don’t want to destroy the crank or something stupid.
Any tips or suggestions?
I know I’m kinda premature with this question, but I thought it would be better to ask first before I jam all the torque to the crank and twist something off!
Any input is greatly appreciated.
I sent john an email as his phone didn’t answer, I’m sure he is busy wrenching just like I am! :thumbsmilie:
