Hey everyone. A couple of months ago I bought a 97 Scrambler 400 4×4 for little to nothing. I thought it was a steal, and possibly I may still be in luck. I have put over $400 in parts just to get it riding again. I took it on a ride the other weekend and after riding for about 25-30 minutes, it would shut off as I would go down a hill or set still for awhile, then it would take a good 5 minutes or more to get it to start and it would backfire and sputter while trying to start it. Well I gave up and took it to the trailer and jumped on the Wolverine (rather have rode the scrammy). I had a guy who has worked on 2-strokes for years come and look at it and he rebuilt the carb and the wheeler started right up and idled as perfect as it could. Rode it around the yard and up and down the road (long enough to get to normal temp) and it ran fine. Went to jump on it the other day to move it and it would not start. (Took a good 2-3 minutes to start it.) Then after I started it that time, it started back up. Went to start it today and it was hesitating to start so I just didn’t start it because I was just messing around. What could be the issue. Before it started, I would just hit the button and it’d fire up. I don’t know what the deal is but it is really starting to aggravate me. Please help me guys, so I don’t give up on this wheeler! :disappointed::disappointed:
I’m a new member & hope I’m posting this in the right section to help others.
Symptoms…bike would idle fine…no engine codes…when cold it ran like a bandit…as soon as the fan come on it acted like it had a rev limiter and would tach 4950 rpm’s and no more…funny thing no bogging, backfiring etc….turn the key off for 20 seconds and she would run fine for another 2 minutes.
After researching the forums I leaned to a bad fuel pump and tore her down.
I know a lot of members offered advice & choice of fuel pumps…I went with this seller on e-bay even though I’m not an e-bay fan…all he sells is pumps and reviewing the feedback other polaris owners were having luck with them so I ordered & had it in 2 days.
Fitment was fine & came with a free strainer…only issue was the ground wire was now a tad short so I spliced/soldered & used heat shrink to add a longer lead.
While I had her apart I did replaced the plugs and upon inspection noticed the clutch side wire rested on a head bolt..sure enough from vibration the wire was almost exposed…keep an eye out for this as I see this a potential problem down the road.
Got her all back together and took it for a 2 hour run before I put the front pain in the butt plastic on…it’s over 90′ here..runs absolutely perfect…pure joy.
For others here is where I got the pump..$42 + free 2 day ship…my bike….2004.5 Sportsman 700 efi.
I recently got a 98 scrambler 500. I had to put a new top end in it, im in the process of putting everything back together but there is one oil line I cannot figure out where it goes. Its the very top one on the oil tank, does anyone know where this thing hooks too?

Hi everyone, Looking for some advice. I have a 04 sportsman 700 EFI. I have replaced the ecu and now the fuel pump turns on when I turn the key and the inline filter fills, yet I am not getting any fuel to the cylinders. I poured a little down the spark plug holes and it started. I have checked the codes and I get 51 and 52 (injector 1 & 2 error). How do I test my injectors? Or is it something else? Any advice would be appreciated!
If the pod mount receptacle receiver is plugged in the two leads it will blow my ACCY fuse also my winch will not work, if i unplug the leads to the pod mount receptacle receiver fuse will not blow and winch will work. I thought i found the problem because the positive terminal was loose. i tightened it and turned on the key to test if it was going to blow, but i forgot to put a fuse in the ACCY slot so there was no fuse in the ACCY slot and it blew the main fuse also a 20amp fuse. i installed two new fuses one in the main slot and a second in the accy slot and test again with newly tightened receptacle receiver but it blew the ACCY fuse…..
I checked the fuse block no corrosion or loose wires
No debris in the pod mount receptacle receiver
Im tracing wire have yet to find any damaged wire
So my question is am i on the right track tracing wire? i feel like i should find a damaged wire or could my problem be caused by something else
Half tempted to bag it and keep it unplugged but i have it torn apart would be nice to figure it out..
