2014 Grizzly 350 trouble

I did a weekend of trail riding last weekend. When I got my quad home i cleaned it up, pulled the air filter out and put it back it. Has not run for a week, My wife took it out this evening for a couple laps around the house, barley getting on the throttle. Gas was low but not on reserve, she went up a hill and it died. i added gas anyways but now it wont stay idling. It will start up with choke on but as soon as i turn choke off it dies. Any thoughts out there? thanks!

TRX 125 stator cover install

I just bought an 87 TRX 125 with a broken stator cover. I found the part, got the old one off fine but when I try to install the new one it hangs up on the left side where the coils go in around the starter shaft. It doesn’t feel like it’s hitting something solid. It feels almost spongy. I have no idea what it could be hitting to make it bind up like that. I know it’s not hitting the change switch because it’s not going in far enough for that to be hitting. It goes over the shaft for the gearshift fine. I’d appreciate any help you can give.

2016 Rancher 420 Valve Noise – Normal?

My new Rancher has low hours on it. This is my first ever Honda powersports product.

I performed the initial 20 hour service myself. (Having worked in the automotive industry as a mechanic for 26 years I’m pretty confident, as I’ve adjusted valve lash before.)

The intake valve was spot on, and the exhaust was a bit on the tight side. After making the adjustment, I buttoned it all back up and noticed that it actually had slightly more noise than before. I would think though that this engine should not make any valve noise whatsoever at an idle, with the valves properly adjusted. I dunno…maybe this is just normal for a Honda engine??

My question is….Do these engines normally produce some valve noise, even with properly adjusted valve clearances? It only produces a valve tick at an idle, after full warm up, and it’s intermittent. There is no valve noise if the engine is under a load. (For example…if you increase the idle speed a bit.)

I read in another forum that if you rotate the crankshaft clockwise past the index mark, after you’re already on TDC, and then come back to it (counterclockwise), that it will activate the automatic compression release and will affect the accuracy of your valve adjustment. Is that accurate? I thought back to my first valve adjustment and its possible that I could have done that. Just to make sure I didn’t make a mistake, I tore into it again at 27 hrs/153 miles to re-check everything. Engine cold, TDC of the compression stroke, .006" on the intake, .009" on the exhaust. The crank was rotated clockwise, until the "T" mark aligned with the index on the crankcase, with clearance at both rocker arms to confirm TDC of the compression stroke. I have both straight, and angled feeler gauges, and used both to get a feel for the proper resistance on them when checking the clearances.

The second time, I found that both valves had approximately .001"-.002" too much clearance. Made the adjustments, and reassembled. Now, it’s a bit quieter, but it still produces some noise….not as much as before though.

I’m very meticulous about maintenance on all my vehicles. Is there a Honda tech out there that can help me? Any advice or confirmation would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks! 🙂

Fender paint protection

I found out on our last ride, my wife likes to put her feet up on the fenders when going through large puddles on the trail. The water just seems to spray just right, up through the floor boards! And she Does like to hit the puddles.

I knew the paint would probably get scratched, but let her have the fun.
So to prevent damage in the future, I got some of the clear stone chip protection film you see on the front of cars. I made some templates of the area I wanted to cover, and cut the film to fit. Goes on easy with a spray bottle of soap and water, and a small squeegee made for the job.
It should keep it looking good for resale value. I can always replace it if it gets worn.

You can find the products online, but I got mine from our bodyshops’s pinstriper. A 24"x24" piece was plenty to do all 4 fenders. You don’t even notice its on there, and I did go right over the safety decals.

1995 425Magnum

I have a 1995 Polaris 425 Magnum. The flywheel magnets came apart in the flywheel and damaged the stator. I replaced the stator and wiring harness. It was simple all the wires are the same color. Just had to plug it in. Now I turn on the ignition and I hear a click in a wire between the battery and the ignition. I turn off the key and it clicks and resets. I found the clicking noise in a sealed bag with a red wire connected to both sides. There is power in and out of it until the click. It was a relay of some sort. It won’t allow power to go to my ignition key switch to start ATV Please help.

Got some good seat time in 2015 rzr 900 xc

Down at the land, the doctors buddies were having a big 80th birthday bash for rich kings dad. (Flat tracker who raced for harley a number of years). My old neighbor is part of their motorcycle club (hare scramble club) so we ran into eachother on the beach and he came over that evening answering all my questions since that is next purchase.

Spent about 35-40 minutes taking it thru the trails, thru the mud, thru the river/lake/mud bogs, flat footing it on the lake perimeter road, jumping it. Granted his is the maxed out version from polaris and has about $3k of goodies added, but my god, it was like driving a 78 Cadillac Deville thru the woods. Absolutely zero, and I mean zero harsh/jarring thru my butt (been having back issues for a month so sensative already) I cannot state just how liquid smooth that thing was no matter if we’re were crawling up busted concrete former retaining wall stuff, rooted hill sides, whoop sections…it ate it up and cradled us like a baby.

The power steering was nice too. I wasn’t overly impressed with the 900 output, it got us thru the woods, but on the long straights it just seemed gutless until it got some steam built up and then you could feel the big bore start to pull, but down low I’m just used to more snap on my quad I guess.

Wife asked why I was getting one, and I explained best I could, but I told buddy, next time he comes down, let me know so I can take the wife for a ride around the lake to let her feel how awesome it is lol. Very expensive test ride, but was going to get one next anyhow so basically just a tease for now:)

Easy to see why everybody is dumping quads for sxs. If mine wasnt set up for exacting work purposes with custom made accessories, I’d have been trading today lol. But painted myself.in a corner with my atv for work duties, so stuck with it.

Problems with a ymf400

Hi guys, just wanted to pick your brains about something if you don’t mind. I have a ymf400 and although it’s not a grizzly it’s got me stumped. Thing started the not taking gas, kinda just fell on its face, when you tried to rev it up any at all. Figured dirty carb so took it apart and pulled the jets to check and sure enough it had a dirty jet which I cleaned and reinstalled. However, I came up with an extra spring. None of the manuals are very discript in exactly which jet this goes on. Any help you guys could give would be appreciated. Thanks in advance
