Commander Max or?

I posted this on my introduction, but I thought I might get a better response here. I’ve seen some other posts, but nothing that really helps out my decision.

Hello, My name is Troy & I’m considering purchasing a can-am commander max (possibly the xt) and I’ve been trolling the forums for all the valuable information it contains. I am married with 2 children, so a 4 seater is what I’m looking for. I want it for work and play, but the ratio is probably 80% play to 20% work. I’m more looking for a good trail riding machine with good power to get me through some off-road/rutty/rocky stuff when I so desire, but nothing too hairy. I’ve test driven just about everything (minus the 4 seat general that isn’t really in dealerships yet) and I’m trying to find someone to talk me into a certain make and model.

I like the Kawasaki Mule Pro FXT for it’s price, quietness, ride, and functionality, but it lacks power & I don’t know just how well it would do off the beaten path.

I also like the TeryX4, it has a decent price and good ride, but the engine is quite loud since it is in the front & might create some really hot temps too in the cab? Not sure on that one though. Also doesn’t have a dump bed which is something I’m really looking forward to using.

The Polaris General is about the only Polaris I really looked at in this category, I drove a 2 seater to get an idea, and the Engine Breaking System was a bit jumpy at low/creeping speeds. Kind of a turnoff, but the machine rode great. Cost is a bit up there though.

I drove the Can-Am Commander Max XT, and I enjoyed the ride and power. Love the bed, and dumping function. The ride in the back wasn’t the greatest for the kids, but meh, they are kids, they’ll be ok. No doors was kind of a downer, and the fact that to access the belts/etc… I would have to take out the seat and console it looked like, makes me think fixing a problem on the trails would be a huge pain.

Even though the opinions on these forums may swing to the Can-Am side, I’m still curious. Pro’s and Con’s for you on the Commander or other machine if you own or have owned one. Thanks in advance, and I look forward to being a member.

33″ BKT Tires

Anyone running these? From what I can tell these are significantly lighter than 32.5 law 2’s. Plan is 6" SATV lift, maverick diff, & turners. Machine is a 15 xmr 1000. Bike already has QSC/STM clutches, full muzzy duals, PC5 with VFJ tune. Undecided on tires. Any insight would be appreciated.

Post carb rebuild power loss

Hi all,

I’ve rebuilt my carb and am having problems with power loss
When I am out testing it or even in the driveway and push the throttle past a certain point, it starts to bog down. Doesn’t die, just bogs down. If I feather it at the zone before it starts to bog down, it will slowly speed up, but I can’t get it to go much more than 30.

Interestingly, if I am running it and it is bogging down, and then turn the fuel knob to "OFF", after a few seconds it will rev up and start accelerating like it used to. Seems like it is getting too much fuel and then when it starts running out of fuel, it starts to accelerate again.

Thoughts? Float is adjusted wrong possibly?

The frustrating thing is that twice now after reassembling, the bike rode and accelerated perfectly the night I reassembled it. Then, after sitting overnight, or for a day or two, and trying it again, it returned to the bog-down problem.

I rebuilt the carb with new needles, jets, etc. I didn’t mess with the air-mix adjustment and didn’t use that part.

I’ve checked about everything else on other similar threads like checking the diaphragm, check hoses for air leaks, etc.

I posted this in an old thread, so apologies in advance if it’s bad form to put into a new thread.

Why a Sportsman?

I’m new to the forum and we have been toying with the idea of getting a 2-up machine of some sort (850 probably) to drag around with us as we fulltime RV around the country so we can do some trail riding. (our riding will be Arizona deserts in the winter, Oregon dunes at times in the summer, Utah and Colorado stuff in the summers and who know what else around the country)
I’ll be honest and before even shopping around figured we would get a Can-am 850 Max XT but after a little research have found that the Polaris Sportsman is the other top choice by many.
Of course talking to salesman from one spot to the other we get lot’s of info but I wanted to ask you Sportsman owners what made you choose the Sportsman over another brand (Can-Am)?
Thanks in advance

Truck front bed protectors?

Hey guys,

I did some searches but couldn’t find anything on what/how you guys protect the front of your truck beds when you tie down your quad. any links/ideas would be great. this is something I need to look into because the few trips I’ve taken I can already see a few marks on the truck/quad.

thanks for any help, I really appreciate this forum and all the knowledge around.
