No temperature gage on display? Really?

I must be missing something. I have a 2015 1000 XTP Max and it has a nice display with clear temperature gauge. I found it very useful and it alerted me to low coolant level before things got serious. I recently purchase a companion 2017 650 XT MAX as well. I love the machine in every way. But one of the first things I checked out on the different display was the location of the Temperature gauge and I find none. Please tell me that I’m just overlooking it somehow. I looked in that manual and saw no reference to a gauge. Say it ain’t so!!

Sportsman/Scrambler Compatibility

I had a bit of a crash and have to do some repairs on my 2016 Scrambler 1000. I’m new to the Polaris brand, but it is my understanding that the Scrambler and Sportsman share a majority of the same components. I’ve called my local dealer and they, of course, say that they’re completely different. While shopping around for parts I’ve noticed that Sportsman parts are considerably cheaper than Scrambler parts. I know there aren’t as many Scramblers out there so it makes is seem artificially rare.

Does anyone know for certain if they do share components?

I’m specifically replacing control arms, axle, hub, knuckle, brake line, and a couple misc. bits. They look the exact same when comparing pictures, but want to be certain before buying anything.

Any help on the matter is greatly appreciated!

Move failing kill switch starter

Dad has a 2001 Sportsman 500 with the combination kill switch and START-PUSH-UP button. The start button is less than reliable and the Kill switch section is dying too so it was an adventure to start it.

This is a spare machine so spending $160 for one of these switches is unacceptable.

I replaced the handlebar switch with the switch leftover from converting my 2012 to the international handlebar switch. This switch mated with the existing plugs with no changes and all functions worked. $0.00
If you have to buy it new it’s about half what the original switch costs. You can probably find this switch used in decent shape too.

I’m still going to need a START switch that’s not a butcher job…
So I says to meself… What about using a $54.00 2002 Key switch?

The 2001 key switch has 4 terminals.

The 2002 key switch has 6 terminals.

The ignition key switches use an unsealed Delphi Metripack 280 plug and terminals that are very cheap. Delphi PN Six Positon Plug 12092254-B with two Terminals PN 12034046-L. I have the terminals in my goodies already and Mouser stocks the plug.

You’ll need around 4 ft of SXL jacketed 18ga automotive wire, 2 terminals, and one plug. I would suggest buying at least 10 terminals… $0.29 US each from Mouser Electronics ain’t going to break the bank.

The key switch terminal positions are labeled A-D (4 term) or A-F (6 term)

2001
A & B are ON
C & D are OFF

2002
A & B are START
C & D are ON
E & F are OFF

Extract the terminals and move each wire from the four position plug to the six position plug one at a time;
4 –> 6
A –> C
B –> D
C –> E
D –> F

The wires for the starter solenoid in the new six terminal plug positions A & B will need to be brandy new. Properly strip and terminate one end of your new start wires with the new Metripack terminals and insert the colors you want in A & B of the new six position plug.

Position A on the six position plug attaches to the WHITE wire with RED stripe that runs down to the starter solenoid. It’s off the old handlebar switch in position C of the plug furthest away from the rider.

Position B attaches to any ignition power wire… RED wire with WHITE stripe.

I used White with a Red stripe attached to the WHITE/RED START wire and Orange with a Red stripe attached to the RED/WHITE power because I could add the tracer stripe colors with a sharpie. Use whatever wire colors you want…
I highly recommend using Cross-link Polyethylene jacketed Automotive wire (SXL, TXL, or GXL). You can use PVC jacketed automotive wire but it doesn’t stay flexible and lets more moisture through. Whatever you do don’t use lamp cord or speaker wire.

I spliced the wires together using size 16 Deutsch DT terminals and adhesive lined marine heatshrink.

This looks and works as if it came from the factory setup this way.

Get the wiring diagrams for your machine and verify everything before you begin…

Time to wash her up

Hey guys,

How do you all wash your quads? I have a 2 week break between hunting seasons and want to clean up quad for next round of hunting. Back in the day I would just plug up exhaust pipe take the power washer to my dirt bikes and let them air dry. Is there any parts I need to cover before washing on my rancher? Will simple green spray and wash down with hose be enough per say

Highlifter Sportsman 1000XP TIRES (29.5X9.5X14)

I’m looking for a set of tires to put on when I’m not in mud.
Currently in North Alabama we are suffering from a long time drought.
All the creeks and ponds that normally make for fun mud riding are dried up.

I would like to buy another set of tires to use in conditions like this.

Something like a Maxxis BigHorn. Or ITP Mud Lite’s.

Currently on my 800 Sportsman I have the Mud Lite’s and have been very happy with the performance.

Can anyone point me in the right direction for some alternative tires for the HL Sportsman?
Finding anything in 29.5X9.5X14 seems difficult. Maybe I need to go up a size?

Any insight is appreciated.

Thanks

Difficulty turning left.. like Derek Zoolander..

Hey guys,

My 1987 TRX350 can turn right just fine, but left is a struggle. It seems like the outside tire turns too far, and the bike just rolls over the sidewall of the tire and pushes through the turn.

Looking underneath, it appears that the one tie rod end has a ton of play in it, and needs to be replaced. The others have a bit of play, I might just do them all at once and never need to worry about this again.

When I look up parts though, I’m finding inner or outer ends, but most sites only list the inner as LH and the outer as RH. Is this the actual side to be used, or the thread orientation? I’m confused…
