04 sportsman 400 help

Hey all I’m new to this pulled a 04 sportsman 400 out of a barn and cleaned the carb, oichange, and got it running but then it wouldn’t turn off, took off the rack and opened it up and a rat got in there and ate all the wires, I got the kill switch, lights, winch back on but no 4×4 I found 2 sets chewed off that have reddish wire with white stripe and a grey wire I found a matching to this and it goes down to the right front wheel and now that side is working but is there not supposed to be one for the right? Are there more wires somewhere does anyone have a good diagram with color chart for this thank y’all

Hand Start

Question: does any one ever retrofit a hand starter? I see it is available on ATVs in Canada yet it is optional on recent Foremans here in USA. I am curious, has any forum member added a pull starter to their ATV?

The Honda manual makes a blunt statement, one can ride farther in an hour than most people can walk in a day. Frankly here in Arizona that is certainly true.

Id like to hear from riders who have made this retrofit and if they have ever been 🙁 stranded 😡 when a pull start may have helped. Thank you in advance.

84 trx 200, backfiring and timing advancing

get it started, not too difficult right now.

but alsost right away it is hunting for a idel spot. put a timing light on it and the timing is walking then it back fires and go back to where it was starts walking again. this process takes only a few seconds and does it again.

things i have done so far
set valves
set timing chain
rebuilt carb
checked and replaced springs on CDI
set base timing.

now i will admit i am not the best person for carbs. (I like my fuel injection better lol) but I think it is pretty dam close to where it should be be it is still hunting.

what causing this to happen and what do i need to do to stop it.

335 Sportsman stuck in High

Managed to pick up a 335 Sportsman from someone who was moving for a good price. Unit runs and moves, rest of the issues are fixable. Drove it home, ran a bit rough and stalled in High range when I parked it. Now I can’t get it to shift out of high into neutral. I disconnected the linkage, and the shifter is still stuck in its place, and manually pushing the linkage to try to get the transmission to shift doesn’t work either. Any suggestions as to how to free the gear shifter and transmission up?

Also, on a separate note, is there a place on this site for access to owners and service manuals for download? Having used user forums for other brands of motorcycles that have this type of feature, was hoping something like it is available here.

2017 Sportsman XP 1000 A-Arm Guards

Have had my XP 1000 for a couple of weeks now and it has surpassed all expectations…….great machine. I ordered the Front A-Arm Guards (product # 2880644). When then arrived I was surprised to find out they will not work on my XP 1000 because it has the High Lifter "Arched" A-Arms. #2880644 is made to fit a straight A-Arm. Now I have to find out if I can return these back to Polaris (which I purchased on their website)?????…….and also, does Polaris make specific A-Arms Guards to fit the High Lifter Arched A-Arms???????

Dredded water issues

Recently purchased a 2000 sportsman 500 for a decent $1500. Sunk a few dollars into it brakes,belt,starter bendix, 2" lift,filters & fluid change. Oh 27" itp mud lites too.
Finally took it out in a real trail ride with some friends who drive sxs. Needless to say I tried to keep up. My rig is mostly stock not yet snorkeled. After a few mud holes & water crossings I hit the big one! Up to the seat it comes and I hear water fill the stock airbox so I keep the throttle on to get out. Seemed to clear up fine till we stopped for a break. I shut it down then tried to refire and I hear a sizzling noise in the handle bar switch/starter button and no start. Then tried to pull start and it locked up. So 2 issues at once. After getting a pull back to the truck and return home I cleaned it up. Didnt have time to pull plug and get clear so it sat for a day with air box open. So out of nowhere today just happened to be walking by and aftermarket fan kicked on like I turned key on except key was not on and switch was not isc. I turned them on and hit starter and fired up. A little steam out of exhaust for a few but now it runs again. My question is…. Is it the switch on handle bar? I changed the silonoid cuz I had a new but still same. When the battery is connected gage and fan stay on no matter if key or switch is on but it will start. Only way to kill power is disconnect the battery. Thanks in advance for taking time to read. Any info or suggestions are welcome.

Coolant capacity

OK, fixed overheating problem(s). Trying to re-fill cooling system on 2013 Sportsman 500.

The book says capacity is 2.7 quarts. I have done everything advised on this and other boards and can only get it to take about 1.8 quarts. Lift front end 30" to burp and run to operating temp (over and over), squeeze hoses, everything.

Both hoses get pretty warm, fan is blowing warm air from radiator, etc. In other words, she is acting like she’s supposed to act, but I’m thinking there must be an air lock somewhere.

Thermostat is fine, pump impeller looks good. I measured the coolant and it’s about a quart shy of taking enough fluid for the stated capacity.

Main concern is that she overheats when I’m way out there somewhere. Trying to avoid a long wait or a long walk.

Thoughts?
