2009 Rancher AT IRS Gear Reduction
Here are some pics:
Old gears and new. Top of pic is the new gears.
Measuring the gap between gear and vss sensor. Filed it down until I had the gap the same as original.
2009 Rancher 420AT Clutch Kit Install
The members concern, and honestly mine too, was if it would work with the AT tranny. There was info on the web about many people attempting an install but then they would have problems shifting with all the models,(manual, ES, and AT), but some would have success and no shifting issues after. I can only guess their problems stemmed from installation error, perhaps pulling the shift shaft components out of normal position when pulling the front clutch cover off. I double checked all these things before assembly. The installation instructions and the OEM Honda manual are a must to have on hand.*
I am happy to report that my AT Rancher shifts perfect in ES mode and in full auto mode with the clutch kit installed. I defiantly noticed a difference right away on rpm engagement but not much higher of rpm. Taking off normally it engages very smoothly, no tranny slamming at all. Perfect in my opinion. Now when I goose that bad boy it will leave rubber patches on the pavement with those super grippy Bighorn tires. In full auto mode it shifts very smooth. I was concerned that lightly cruising in auto that it would be seeking the right gear because of clutch engagement and disengagement. Nope it shifts perfect, nice and smooth full throttle or light throttle.*
I installed the EPI Economy clutch kit. This kit has a higher rpm engagement than stock but not nearly as much as the competition clutch kit. I can only guess the competition kit might cause an issue with the AT model.*
2009 Rancher AT New Bighorn Tires and Delta Wheels
The ATV did gain 46lbs additional weight with these but the ATV seems just as peppy as before. I weighed the tire and wheel combos individually, both new and old. The ATV also gained 1" or better in ground clearance.
I live in Thornton Colorado and do plenty of trail riding on mostly rocky trails, these tires should be perfect for it. I will be taking it out to Moab in June, these tires should do great. A big thanks to Kentco and others for their valued opinions.
