Yet another “no spark” thread

Greetings everybody. First post so go easy on me. I will say I have done some reading and thought I had figured out my problem but alas, I am just wasting my money.

2001, 600. I’m cruising around one day, luckily close to home, and the machine kinda sputters and dies. I get it home, fart around with it a couple days, do the ol’ wire wiggle and she fires right up. Now someone had done some previous repairs (more on that later) where wires had been twisted together and taped. No solder or shrink wrap or even a butt connector.

A couple months down the road, no issues until my brother in law had been cruising it around, on and off for a couple hours. He brings it back acting kinda weird. I jump on it and it seems to run fine until I gun it. It starts backfiring, stalling, lack of power, etc. If I’m easy on it though it runs fine.

Well now my wife wants to take a cruise. It fires up fine but as soon as she give it any throttle at all, it tries to die. Eventually it quit running and won’t start at all. Now it won’t crank and I find my starter relay is bad.

After some interwebs research, I find where the wiring harness on the right hand side by the exhaust has been slightly melted. I read that it can kill the starter relay, pickup coil and ignition (?) coil. So I replace them all. The previous shoddy repair turns out to be for the same thing. I checked the harness, repaired it a little and put some heat tape on it.

So at this point I’ve replace the stator/pickup coil, the ignition coil, and the starter relay. Still no spark, tested by pulling the wire off the plug and either looking or feeling for a pulse.

I will say, I got the cheap eBay stator/pickup coil and had to cut and solder the harness. I wasn’t too sure on which wires to connect. There were three white wires on the stator and I had no idea which went where so I winged (?) it. The others I’m fairly certain were right. Green to green, white to white, red with blue stripe to red, and brown to reddish brown.

What next?? Get a manual? 😀
