Weird lean issue with 03 Kodiak 450. Please help

So I have had my 03 kodiak 450 4×4 for 3 months just finished doing Lota of mild repairs. I have never rode it more then 15 minutes at a time until today. Last week I rebuilt the carb. Set it to spec via the manual. Rebuilt petcock and cleaned the tank out. Quad started right up and ran better then before. No jet kit. Just a rebuild. Uni filter and spark arrestor removed. That’s all as far as engine mods.

So it’s been great running. Went out to ride trails today. First four hours were great. Quad was awesome. Little mud at first but mostly hard pack and rock crawling. Suddenly in the hottest part of day. It started sputtering like it was running out of fuel. It dies so I switch to reserve and it starts right up. 5 minutes later it does it again. So I park it for 30 minutes and go out on the trails again.

Does all right for a little bit. Starts backfiring and sputtering like it lean. Then runs fine. Does this on and off for 1 hour. It’s 102 degrees outside when the quad started messing up. Finally dies like it’s out of fuel and the quad feels very hot. So a big blow to the ego is my wife’s quadrunner 160 pulls me back 3 miles of rough terrain. Get it back to truck and load it up. Just barely.

I’m thinking engine is getting to hot and causing electrical issues or vapor lock. But when we get it home 1.5 hrs later. The wife drives it off the trailer gets 50 yards down the road and it does it agin. Switch to reserve and barely gets it in the garage.

So where do I start? I have a new spark plug on the bench..
