Vinyl Graphics, Wraps, and Hydrographics

I purchased a new ‘16MY Outlander Max XT (570) for my wife. She wanted to girly it up so I checked out hydrographics and vinyl wraps. The cost for hydro dipping was $700 + shipping from www.liquid carbondesigns.com and out of my price range. Most on-line “kits” provide roughly 80% +/- coverage and were in the $250 price range. Since this machine is pearl white and the graphic my wife wanted (Moonshine Muddy Girl Camo) had little white in it, I had to go with a 100% wrap. I could have sent the Outty to a local graphic shop, but they would have to order the material and I would have to pay their mark-up plus the $650 installation cost. I went with purchasing the vinyl film on-line direct at www.powersportswraps.com (one of the few licensed retailers for this graphic) and installed it myself.
The Outty required one 4’ x 10’ roll ($198) and one 4’ x 5’ roll ($99) to completely cover all seven pearl white body panels. I also purchased and used 3M Edge Sealer Tape 8520 ($15) and 3M Primer 94 ($16). I have never applied graphics before, but after watching a lot of YouTube installation videos, it looked simple enough. Patience is the key- plan on spending at least three hours on each panel. The 3M film is great to work with. It allows you to remove/reposition it, remove wrinkles, and has micro air channels in the adhesive to help remove air and eliminate bubbles.
A few notes on the installation. Since I wanted 100% coverage, I removed all the panels and wrapped around the edges, leaving ¼”to ½” extra under the panel which I sealed off with 3M Edge Sealer Tape. Because of all the compound curves on the fenders, I had to cut and splice several pieces for each fender- just keep the pattern going in the same direction when overlapping and it will flow fine. The hood and sides took one piece each. You will be making a lot of relief cuts, so look into and practice before starting. Overall I spent about $330.00 and over 20 hours by dong it myself and could not be more pleased with the results.
