TRX500FM dies when you disconnect negative terminal on battery

Have a 2007 Honda Foreman TRX500FM that has me stumped?????
I cannot pull start the engine without having the battery connected
Motor dies when you disconnect NEG term from battery
Stator has 30 Volts AC on all 3 legs with no shorts to ground
Voltage reg only shows 1-2 volts DC straight off the regulator output terminals
but when connected, the battery voltage jumps from 12.65 and levels out at 14VDC or so and seems to be charging properly
As soon as you disconnect battery it will TRY to stay running but coughs out.
It runs fine with battery connected
Any suggestions?
I have 4 Voltage regualtors-all do the same thing-cant all be bad….
I know this bike has a DC CDI but not sure if that means it HAS to have a battery to fire
Never seen this before but would like to know if anyone has seen similar
ANY Help GREATLY appreciated
Thanks
