Polaris sportsman 400- 2005.
I haven’t been able to start it with the key for a year. Finally opened it up today. Battery is good reading 12.91 volts. When I run the engine it shoots up to around 17 volts.
From another posting here I was able to test the solenoid and I’m pretty sure that’s okay. It does click. I get battery voltage when I measure across the red / white small wire and negative.
Next removed the housing over the flywheel and what a mess… it’s all rusted. I have attached some pictures.
Have couple questions about this. First of all… there was a lot of residue that looks like very small coil springs that are broken. Does anyone have any idea what these are from? see the picture.
Next take a look at the Bendix… is this cleanable? Or am I just better off getting a new one?
I have not pulled at the starter yet.. do you guys think I should just replace it at this point or it might be just a Bendix that’s causing my problem?
Given the overall state of this ..should I pull the flywheel and really clean everything else out.
Is it possible that the electrical stator behind the flywheel is damaged? I am getting a continuous flashing battery light on and since last winter I’ve experienced times where the bike just shut off while using the winch…. as if I just had no power.
Appreciate any input you guys have I want to try and get this wrapped up next weekend
Thanks.. Vincent
