Snow Tires for the 2016 Gade – Growlers-Intimidators-Zillas-Mayhems
Getting ready to get a set of snow tires and wheels for my 2016 Gade xxc 850. Most of my winter riding will be on snow packed roads, lakes/ice, and some deeper snow (and not the type of snow riding were I’m out to blow up the engine every time I ride). Just don’t want to make the wrong decision, so I thought I would run this by the group,
After a bunch of research I have narrowed it down to the (Made in USA) Pitbull Growler XOR UBER 27.5×9-14 in all four corners, with a 14-7 5+2 offset wheel (or possibly a 4+3 offset). If the there is a fitment issue with a 28" tire I can always drop down to a 27"
Is the distance on the hubs from side to side the same on the front and back. Just want to make sure if I get the same size tires and wheel offset they will track correctly? I don’t believe there would be any fitment issues with this set up, but please charm in if I am wrong. (even that the 27.5 Growlers run around the 28” mark).
For the wheels:
would I be happier with a 4+3 offset or a 5+2 on the 14-7 wheel. If the best set up is the 4+3, I could always run a 1” spacer with a 5+2. Not a lot of wheels to select from with a 4+3 offset without paying an arm and a leg. These will just be used in the winter so I don’t think I really need a beadlock wheel. Just something that looks good that will do the job.
(And Yes, a 12×7 wheel would perform better in the snow due to more side wall, but I really like the looks of the 14×7 with a 28” tire. And also the same narrow tire in the four corners for snow))
I have a set of 4x Mayhems 28×9-14 weighing in at 30# on my Sportsman 570, but hate how the ride at low speed. I like the reviews on the Zillas, but looking for a little better bite for the packed snow, and not sure if they have the same slow speed roughness as the Mayhems. The Intimidator 28×10-14 looks like it would be a nice tire for snow, but I cannot find any reviews on how it performs in the snow. Only that it is a nasty mud tire, that weighs in at 45#. And it does look pretty nice.
(In all four corners)
1st Choice = Pitbull Growler XOR UBER 27.5×9-14 (Made in USA)
2nd Choice = Pitbull Growler BG2.5 27×9-14 (but these are made in china)
3rd Choice = Intimidator 28×10-14 (??????)
4th Choice = Zillas 28×9-14
5th Choice = Mayhem 28×9-14
(Same wheel choice would apply for the above tie choices, 14-7 5+2 offset wheel (or possibly a 4+3 offset)
Again these would only be used as a winter snow tire, and am not overly concerned for winter riding with a performance loss due to a heavier tire.
