Slightly Different Reverse Question

Hi All. First Post. Proud (new) owner of a 2002 Rancher ES. I bought it knowing it couldn’t go into reverse and am almost ready to purchase the safety sensor.

Upon re-reviewing all the various "can’t go into reverse" posts, I noticed something interesting that someone said. The discussion was in regard to whether the cable was "plugged in" to the sensor. That didn’t sit right, but maybe there’s a difference in mine WRT the year/etc.

On mine, when you press the red button down and pull the brake, the cable pulls on a lever. This is still connected and pulling the lever. It looks like a mechanical connection more so than being "plugged in", however.

Can anyone confirm that this is what plugged in means, or is there a secondary link to that sensor that could have come loose?

Also, at one point "jiggling" the cable underneath allowed it to work for a bit. No longer.

So, I’m wondering two things:

1. Does moving the lever mean that the connection is good?
2. Is it possible that the cable isn’t moving the lever "far enough"?

Thanks.
