Pro UTV Parts sells all three of these sand tires. PM for best price.
There has been a lot of speculation about which paddle tire is best and if paddle tires are any better than Big Horns. Pro UTV Parts is testing all four tires at the Little Sahara Sand Dunes in Utah. The tests were conducted to the best of our ability to be fair with each tire manufacturer. We want to know which tire is best and if paddle tires are in fact better than Big Horns. The testing is at a large sand hill at Sand Mountain inside the Little Sahara Sand Dunes.
A stock 2014 RZR 1000 was the test mule on the .37 mile test climb. Flaggers were stationed at the top and bottom to signal when the machine was ready to run and the timer was ready. The timer was at the top. The timer would start the test when he saw the signal from the bottom flagger as the machine started the climb. The timer was stopped when the test machine pasted the finish line. Each tire was given three runs up the hill and the times were averaged.
Sand conditions were not ideal in our opinion for the test because of rain over the past few days. We also had another problem, our only set of EFX Sand Slingers had two right rear tires in this set and we were unable to test these tires because one was facing forward and the other was facing backward. We want a fair tire test and we could not fairly test the Sand Slinger with one tire facing the wrong direction. We picked this set up from Colorado Components at Moab during the Rally on The Rocks. They had two sets and we think that they got two rights in this set and two lefts in the other set mixed up. We were all leaving the show and were in a hurry to get home and did not check this before we left. I called Colorado components and they immediately offered to send a left rear tire at no charge for the test. We will go back another day to the same location at Sand Mountain and test all four tires at the same time when the sand is dryer and we have the left rear Sand Slinger.
Visually the Sand Slingers are huge compared to the other two tires. The rears appear very similar to the Sand Strippers except they are a lot bigger! The fronts appear very similar to the STU Razors except much bigger also! The Sand Blaster was slightly wider and taller than the Sand Stripper Full HP. The Sand Stripper Full HP has 1.25” robust paddles and the Blaster has 1” thinner and narrower paddles. The Sand Strippers appeared to be the toughest of the two tires tested and may stand up to abuse in rocks better that the Blasters. The Sand Blaster was faster up the hill in two out of three runs and averaged over one second faster than the GMZ product at the end of the day. The Big Horns were unable to complete the climb.
One thing that should be said is that both sets of tires tested were producing more drag than the Maxxis 30” Big Horns. The STUs and GMZs both dragged the machines rpm down from 8450 to about 7500 rpm. A RZR 1000 runs best at 8200-8450 rpm at our altitude of 4700’. We will bring our Dirty Dog clutch kit with us and re-tune the clutch before the next test.
