Redneck air filtration

I tried this for the first time the other day to see if I could pre-filter the air before it gets to the actual air filter. My goal was to do it inside the air box, where it was easily accessible without having to take other parts of the machine apart.
I had this packing material laying around, I cut it so it was a tight fit and stuffed it between the intake and filter.
It was a moderately dusty 8 hr ride overall. I could not believe the amount of dust inside the air box.
The packing created clouds of dust when banged together after removing them. However you can see it did not stop the dust from getting to the air filter, nor did I expect it too. I would like to find some material with a tighter weave, it might work a little better. I took it out rinsed it, let dry and reinstalled.
The oem filter was still dirty. The engine intake tube was clean.
I am not sure this is the ultimate fix, however it obviously helped filter the air.
