Hi guys, I had an issue with the rear brakes on my wifes 2013 Sportsman 500 over Memorial weekend. We were about 6 miles into our first ride and she called me on the Garmin and told me she had no brakes. I rode back to the last stop sign and she was not lying. No front or rear brakes. The rear caliper was still really hot, it had melted the seals, the dust covers for the pins , and even got the hub hot enough to melt the dust cover for the castle nut off. All the brake fluid leaked out on the rim from the front master cylinder. When I got it home I checked the rear master cylinder reservoir and it was still topped off with fluid. I put a new caliper on it and bled the system. The rear master was hard to get to bleed, but finally got it. I took it out for a test drive yesterday and after riding about 5 miles to my brothers house I checked the rear caliper and hub and they were both pretty hot to the touch, the fronts were cool. However, I didn’t notice any bogging and with the machine in neutral it rolls easy so I don’t think the brakes are locking up. I didn’t smell brakes burning either. I really don’t want to trash another caliper. Do you have any idea what could be causing this? I am thinking maybe the rear master is bad because when the seals did melt the rear did not leak out but also were not working. But if this was the case, wouldn’t the rear be locking up? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
