Outlander 500 XT or 800 XT?

New to modern ATVs, and I am planning to buy an Outlander to ride trails and open fields with my teenage son, who has a 2008 Renegade 500. I also plan to add a plow and move snow. I’ve narrowed it down to two 2013 machines:

500 XT with 700 miles
800 XT with 2,100 miles

Overall condition between the two seems to be close, with a very slight edge going to the 800.

The 800 is approx. $700 more than the 500.

Am I crazy to not buy the 800? I’m thinking about power for my use and ease of resale (thinking that 3, 4, 5 years from now, it should be easier to sell the 800, although I have no empirical evidence to back that up).

That said, $700 is $700, and I could use that saved money to buy a plow and other accessories. For my use, is the 800 overkill? I mean, more power is almost always better (or, maybe just always better), but I don’t see me wanting to go 60 or 70 mph, and I suppose it’s theoretically possible to have "too much" machine.

For the record, I’ve ridden my son’s Renegade on a very limited basis, and it has not felt slow or underpowered. However, I’m afraid my opinion could change over time, as I become more and more used to riding. And, again, I’m thinking about desirability when it’s time to sell.

Would really appreciate any and all thoughts/advice! Thanks!
