Oil pan removal – future nightmare for all who do their own service
/rant
So, to my delight, I am in the process of removing my oil pan. Let me start by venting on the absolutely ingenious (sarcasm strongly added) design Polaris put into this one. I started my day by doing my yearly oil change service. Upon putting the drain plug back in it went in relatively easy, but decided it wouldn’t like to tighten fully. I attempted to remove the drain plug and it now won’t come out. To my dismay, somehow without putting any force into it I stripped the threads on the oil pan. Great, right? Now I have to pull the entire motor in order to remove the oil pan. Wouldn’t be so bad if there were any instructions related to this anywhere on the internet. I’ve pretty much gotten to the point where I am going to go buy a service manual. This also sucks because I have literally removed everything I’ve needed to for removing the engine except the back of the belt case. Any quick suggestions for removing the belt pulley’s would be greatly appreciated as it will save me some money.
On a side note, and to save future headaches, I am going to suck it up and make the Polaris dealer do my oil changes because I can see this being a recurring problem with the extremely soft magnesium oil pan threads.
Oh well, when this is done and over with I am only out $108 for parts and probably 5-6 hours of my life (better than the $450 the dealer wanted to do it).
Again any information on removing the pulley’s would be greatly appreciated.
