Occasional Stall/Non Start – 1991 Fourtrax 250x

Hello all,

I have a 1991 Honda Fourtrax 250X (kick start) that is in very good, stock condition & low hours.

Recently while on vacation in Baja, it suddenly stalled on me out of the blue while riding it, it didn’t overheat, it didn’t run out of fuel, it just quit. I tried kick starting it but it was almost as if it wasn’t getting any spark (I checked the spark plug cable and it was ok).

Then suddenly it started up again and was fine for a while. Later it did the same thing.

Came back from vacation, took it to get a tune up (they rebuilt the carburetor, changed oil, etc). Stored it in my garage ever since, and yesterday I tried to start it, and again it wouldn’t budge (it normally starts 1st or 2nd kick). After about 15 minutes of trying, it started up (kick starting gets tiresome FAST).

What could be causing this? I suspect it must be something electrical but have no idea which part it might be, has anyone had similar experiences with a similar model? (This is the early 250x which is basically a 300ex with a kick start instead of electric).
