I’m new to the forum and to ATV’s in general. I purchased a used 2008 Polaris Sportsman 800 with an unknown history. I seem to be working the bugs out as I go but I have encountered one that I can’t figure out.
I was riding on a trail and the engine stalled but when I tried to start it the display did not come on. My first instinct was to check to make sure the battery post had not come lose, and it hadn’t. Then I noticed the headlights were still lit. I checked the fuses to make sure they were still good, and they all were. When I turn the key The headlights come on but no display and no fuel pump. My guess is no power to the ECU.
I had a wrench so I jumped the posts on the starter solenoid and the machine turned over but still wouldn’t start as it seemed like there was no power to the ECU. Eventually it started and ran long enough to get home.
I pulled the bike out the next day and again no power to the display so I took the bike and pulled off all the plastics to clean the years of caked mud so I could start to troubleshoot. Once the I cleaned everything the bike acted completely normal. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should check if it does this again??
Thanks in advance.
James.
