Starting issues / starter/ bendix

Hi everyone

Polaris sportsman 400- 2005.

I haven’t been able to start it with the key for a year. Finally opened it up today. Battery is good reading 12.91 volts. When I run the engine it shoots up to around 17 volts.

From another posting here I was able to test the solenoid and I’m pretty sure that’s okay. It does click. I get battery voltage when I measure across the red / white small wire and negative.

Next removed the housing over the flywheel and what a mess… it’s all rusted. I have attached some pictures.

Have couple questions about this. First of all… there was a lot of residue that looks like very small coil springs that are broken. Does anyone have any idea what these are from? see the picture.

Next take a look at the Bendix… is this cleanable? Or am I just better off getting a new one?
I have not pulled at the starter yet.. do you guys think I should just replace it at this point or it might be just a Bendix that’s causing my problem?

Given the overall state of this ..should I pull the flywheel and really clean everything else out.

Is it possible that the electrical stator behind the flywheel is damaged? I am getting a continuous flashing battery light on and since last winter I’ve experienced times where the bike just shut off while using the winch…. as if I just had no power.

Appreciate any input you guys have I want to try and get this wrapped up next weekend

Thanks.. Vincent

New LEDs all over!

I just finished wiring up a new rigid 10" LED light bar onto my front bumper, along with adding blue Polaris made under glow from the new kits they have. I will be replacing the pod light with a rigid 6" LED as well this week! Pics to come..

Curious to see how everything holds up on the trail!

How to remove warning stickers

I just took all the warning stickers off of my relatively new 850 and boy does it make it look way better. It is a super easy process for anyone to improve the look of their bike. To take them off, first heat up the sticker with a heat gun or hair dryer a little bit, just don’t melt it. Then start at a corner and peal it right off. Take your time and it will all come off in one piece pretty easily. Spray some WD40 onto the sticker glue leftover and use a clean shop towel to clean it off. I let the WD40 sit for about 30 seconds and the residue came right off. Good luck!

2000 Ds650 clicking

I recently picked up a extremely clean 2000 ds650 on a trade for some items. It was not running when I got it. When I brought it home I noticed it had a cracked starter so I replaced it along with the one way spray. Bought a new battery and hooked it up and just clicks by the solenoid. Thinking that was the problem I got a new one and put it with same result. I tightened all the wires and noticed it was a cluster so I ripped all the wiring out and bought an untouched harness and installed. Only wire that the new harness has different is a yellow wire with blue line that runs near the clutch case. I looked on the old and it did not have this wire or it was cut off at some point. With new harness in it does the exact same thing. Just clicking. I have ruled out batteries by swapping from my other 700 quad. Where should I start looking next?

2008 500 Sportsman HO starting problem

Its been starting and running great. I went to start it and it clicked and the power went off on the dash cluster. Every time I turn the key it clicks and the power goes off. Then the dash starts blinking hot engine but it was cold. I pulled started it and it was running really bad. I had to take the positive wire off the battery to make the fan quit running. Could the solenoid cause this? Thanks, Neil

Anyone else’s dealers having issues getting 2017 coming in?

Had to take my travel trailer in for a recall and through in the annual inspection so I had a couple hours to kill yesterday so I stopped by a near by Polaris Dealership. In talking with the staff, they haven’t seen any 2017’s yet and didn’t know when they would be getting them. Took the 2016 570 Touring EPS for a test ride while I was there. While I can see why people notice the EBS, I can’t see for the life of me why they hate it so bad. While I agree it takes a bit of getting used to, it took be less than two laps around the parking lot to have it figured out. anyway I thought it was a bit odd for it to be November and them not having had a single shipment of 2017’s yet.

need some electrical help

Hey everyone, I need some help. 2003 trailblazer. I picked it up broken, and put a battery in it, dashboard came on with ignition key, try to turn it over, and nothing happened. When you let go of the key, the dashboard no longer lights up even after cycling the key off and back on. I replaced the sealed circuit, starter solenoid, and ignition switch. The dashboard will not light up unless you disconnect the battery and reconnect it. Every once In awhile after I’ve disconnected and reconnected the battery, it will actually crank the motor when you cycle the key, but once you let off the key, the dashboard won’t light up and it wont crank. Once you cycle the key and let off of the key, both sides of the solenoid next to the battery have voltage, which isn’t supposed to happen. Once you disconnect the battery, and reconnect it..there’s only voltage on one side of the solenoid. Someone help figure out what’s going on so I can get it cranking correctly and move forward with this project!
