New outlander owner!/ new to the forum!

I just wanted to say hi to everyone! I just bought my first ATV a 2014 Outlander Max XT 800r. It has 416 miles! It seems like there is a great amount of knowledge here. I was wondering if anyone undercoats there ATV? There was a little surface rust on a few welds towards the front of the frame so I used a paint called chassis saver and touched up those spots. I plan on getting skid plates soon too!

01 300EX just shuts off when idling

Just bought an 01 300ex, and doing some maintenance on it (brakes, tires, alignment, valves, etc). It runs pretty good, but has a weird quirk. If I let it sit and idle, it will randomly shut off. Hit the button, it fires right back up. It does not do this while riding.

I have a carb rebuild kit on the way, so that may be part of it, although I doubt it.

Any thoughts?

2006 Predator 90 – intermittent start issues

Hi All,

My sons 2006 Predator 90 won’t start always. We kick it and most days it will fire right up. One time we went out to the shed, fired it up and loaded it onto the trailer for a 40 minute drive. When we got to the trails and unloaded, it would not kick over/fire up.

This sort of thing happens often. We are able to start it up and ride for a while. Then we shut it off, it cools off, and then all of a sudden it won’t kick over again.

It works, but then it doesn’t. When it won’t restart, we try re-seating the kill tether, flipping the run/stop switch, removing/re-insert the key, enable the choke, push the choke in, switch in/out of neutral… It just doesn’t want to start sometimes.

This last time after trailering it home, I pushed it into the garage and let it sit for the week. The next time I tried to start it, you guessed it, if fired right up. Doesn’t make any sense.

(the electric start never worked after buying it used – never tried to get that fixed)

Thanks for your time and I appreciate any response.

Another nail in the coffin.

Hydro Locked Grizz 700 basket case

Hi all! Its been a while, I finished my little 125 grizz rebuild, wandered across another basket case and wanted to share some pics.

This time its a 190 hour 2011 Grizz 700. The bike hit a water filled hole at speed, rider went over the handlebars and dad sold it for $700 with a title.

The motor hydro locked, the steam ripped a 1" swath of nikasil off the cylinder. You can see most of the nikasil on the oil pickup screen. The shock wave crushed the needle bearing in the crank.
No other damage..head, valves etc are fine and like new. has the upgraded reverse gear etc..

Otherwise the bike is clean, complete, with some nice Mud Lites and no other mods.

had the cylinder replated for $200…they did a nice job.
had the crank rebuilt for $97 including shipping and $130 in stock Yamaha parts. New rod, needle bearing and crankpin. They also did a fine job and took about 10 days to return the crank.

here are some pics…
Oh just so you know……..I used a factory service manual, torque wrench and all Yamaha parts that I bought at a discount. All stock. Yup, I did have to pull the engine and split the case to remove the crank.
And those needles from the bearing were round and straight before the "accident"

if you have a clean place to work and are not in a rush , its doable.

Battery or electrical help.

I’m having trouble with my battery going dead. I had to jump start it last weekend, so I charged it up, and I just went out to start it and it is dead again.

All I get is a loud clicking, almost grinding sound from the wiring box that is connected directly to the battery by large gauge wires. And I am wondering exactly what that wiring box is, and if something is wrong with it.

The battery is only about a year old.

I have went so far as to buy a solar trickle charger to see if that will help. I just got it installed this afternoon, so only time will tell.

What could be draining my battery so quickly, and what can I do about it?

The Grizzly is a 2003.
