88′ Trail boss restoration

Hi, our first post here. We have an old weathered trail boss. We are unsure of the exact model, according to the registration papers it’s a 88, but the gear box has LO/HI, N R, or so it seems, the letters are gone, which seems to have been introduced in 89. The only number we could find was *159947 stamped on the rail by the cyllinder on the left side. The nines could also be zeros or maybe eights, it’s a bit rusty to be honest. We think it could be a fun project getting rolling again.

Last time we tried to start it, the start motor worked, but there was no ignition and there was a fuel leakage from between the cylinder and head. So our plan is to try out the engine with new gaskets, new spark plugs etc and then try to remove as much rust as possible and give it a new finish. It looks like a nice machine and it could be a lot of fun, both fiddling with it and riding it.

Any advice or tips are appreciated. Thank you.

Wiring ? 2000 Xplorer 400

I got the ATV running and the previous owner jacked with all the wires. I installed a new ignition switch and corrected most of the wiring. I have one power wire that I can not figure out what it is for, I am thinking fan motor since that is powered with a rocker switch the previous owner installed. The wire is red with a white tracer and I just added the female bullet connection to protect it. Anyone with a ATV like this one? Let me know what it is for.
