hi. ive been an atv off road enthusiast since the early 1980’s . I started on trikes then sport quads , now I have a fleet of Hondas.(two trx300 4x4s,03 foreman 450s,07trx90,08 rubicon,2011 trx500fm).
all have been very trouble free,however over the holidays my rubicon developed a problem that baffled me for a bit. I turned to the internet for help but alas even the Honda forum didn’t seem to have the answer.
the trouble was one ive seen discussed but not always answered. my fourwheel drive engages fine but after 50 feet +/- a bit it kicks out. then it (the 4×4 light)starts to flash a code. two flashes the 4to 5 second gap then two more flashes and so on. if I restart the bike it will work again for 50 feet or so.
finally in desperation I called the local dealer,suprise! he was helpful!
the two flash code means "no signal from front differential VSS sensor"now there are two sensors on the diff housing ,one atop the ring gear, and one on the front engine to diff driveshaft where it enters the front diff(where the 4×4 actuator is). he cautioned me to check the wiring carefully and not run out and buy a sensor till I have because once you buy a sensor its yours(non returnable)I thought I had checked the wiring well, but low and behold on the left side behind the large black shroud there are three connectors and one was pulled apart.result of a stick or tree being rammed into it
