First, I wanted to introduce myself by saying "Sorry to post my first thread with a problem" but we are pretty frustrated. It looks like there is a lot of knowledge and experience in this forum, so I am keeping fingers crossed for some help.
We are not new to ATVs. We had two Honda Rubicons and a Can-Am Outlander 400 prior to this year. Last month we bought an orange burst 2016 Sportsman 570 EPS for my wife and a 2016 Touring 570 SP (Blue Fire) for me (Broncos colors!). We intend to keep them at our cabin at about 9700 feet.
We got them on Saturday afternoon and went out Sunday morning with them. We were going up regular forest service trails and varying our speeds. At about an hour and 45 minutes into the ride the orange one starts to sputter and lose power. Then it died. Started it again and then it ran but would not rev past 2800rpm and went real slow. Shut it off for awhile and waited. Started again and it ran fine. We continued our trip up and went over lots of rocks and up some steeper terrain. It got to the top just fine at 12,400 feet. On its way down, however, it did the same thing, but much worse. Was really hard to restart and would just bog along. We took the air filter cover off and it ran ok so we put it back on and it went for about 20 feet – same thing. We kept doing this drill for about a 1/4 mile. Finally, after the last bout, it started and was running well and I just kicked it and went straight down. I stopped a couple of times with no issues.
We took it to the dealer (they picked it up, actually:hump:) and they, of course, could not re-create the problem. Polaris had told them to try a couple of re-routing of things (I was not told specifically). They said they ran it about an hour and a half and took it up high with no issues. So we got it back and went out the next weekend. It started acting up again. This time it just stopped. We had been able to do the same trip as before, but coming down it just did the same thing. It had made it longer/further before incident however. This second time, it would finally just not start again so we left it on the trail in a clearing over night.
Next day, I went up with a tow strap and of course it fired right up! I wanted to video what it was doing for the dealer so we went back on the same trip. Got all the way up and almost back to the clearing again with no incident, but then it did it again. I took 5 videos in succession. They showed it bogging down and losing power. RPMs would only go to about 2300 and it would stop moving. Hi/Lo gears made no appreciable difference other tan a slight speed difference. I vented the gas cap as the dealer said Polaris said to do. Same result. So I towed it home. Got it back to the dealer. They again cannot re-create it. They saw no codes. (I never saw any ‘idiot’ light illuminate on the display during any of this.) They seem stumped and Polaris says they are stumped. They said my videos did not help to diagnose the problem because it was not on the computer.
One last aside. While I was hooking up the tow strap, I noticed a brake light bulb dangling from my touring machine. The bulb had not been twisted in or seated well enough apparently so the bulb rested on the plastic opening and melted it! The plastic dripped into the hole so that I could not even put it back in.
Needless to say, I am so far not impressed with the quality of these machines – which is too bad because we really like many of the features but especially the ride and handling of the machines.
Any thoughts on what the problem may be would be greatly appreciated! I called another dealer’s service department and he said it could be the O2 sensors. I put my shop in touch with him and now that theory seems to be discarded. Everyone is scratching their head.
Thanks for reading and any thoughts. As above, sorry to start out with a problem.
