Did you read about the SOS law change about making ORV or side by sides road legal? In the great lake trail rider monthly magazine they say in the attached tif file (201510274739818.tif) that ORV, ie ATV and SXS and dune buggies can no longer be made road legal but they say that dirt bikes can still be made road legal if they follow the TR-54 inspection form. But then on the attached SOS law (SOS-LAW.jpg) it says that to be considered an assembled vehicle you can build a dune buggie or sand rail and it can be considered an assembled vehicle and then be road legal. This law and the GLTR article seem to conerdict each other. Also because they grandfathered in all SXS that are already road legal my RZR is worth a lot more as it IS road legal and can be sold and the road legal status goes to the new owner. The new law also opens the door to custom frame builders that make a frame that all the SXS components to fit the custom frame and then it meet the requirement to be considered an assemble vehicle that can be made road legal…guess there is always a way around this law…
See the attached JPEGS showing the official Michigan SOS Law and also the Great Lake Trail Rider (GLTR) magazine article about the change.
This changes everything for SXS in the state of Michigan as we have ORV/Single track trails (dirt bikes only) Road legal only trails, Snowmobile trails, two-track trails, federal forest two-track trails, state forest two-track trail, county roads and Michigan state roads. With this law change SXS wider than 50" ie RZR 800 standard models are just about outlawed to ride in Michigan as the RZR-S model at 60", RZR 900 at 64", RZR 1000 at 64", Can-Am Maverick at 64" and just about all other SXS wider than 50" will be considered to breaking the law if they ride on federal forest roads, state forest roads and marked snowmobile trails as only road legal vehicle can ride on those trails or roads. Even though ORV are allowed on some county roads and road shoulders this law greatly reduces where SXS can legally ride, but if you have a road legal machine then you can ride just about anywhere you please, which is the whole reason that most SXS riders went through the process of making their SXS road legal, mind you it is a very expensive process to meet the requirement of TR-54 in the state of Michigan…
So this is a heads up to all Michigan SXS riders
