Low volt battery issue-intermittent

First off, this is my first post on the forum regarding an issue. I tried searching quite a bit to find the same problem, but couldn’t quite find the exact problem. If anyone can point me to a thread that sounds about right please feel free.

I have a 2016 sportsman 570 w/o power steering. Purchased in June, now has around 320 miles and a little over 30 hours.

Yesterday we went trail riding in the snow. At one point we found an open field, about a foot of snow, messed around a little. Got back on the trail and about 15 mins later my low volt message came on. Started around 10.5-10.8 and slowly fell. I turned off my heated grips but it was to no help. Continued to drop until it hit 7.8-8ish and finally died.

We took the cover off the battery and checked the connectors. Found out the positive connection was very loose. We cleaned it and tightened it back down. Still wouldn’t fire back up. Checked under the seat and any other spots we thought might be an obvious area for a bad connection. Still wouldn’t go-it would turn over and crank but just couldn’t start. About 30 mins later it read 9.5 volts and somehow started. I decided to jump back on and try and ride it out in hopes some higher revs would charge it back up. As soon as I got on the trail it fell right away, to around 7 volts. Started backfiring like crazy. Hardly any power and the screen on the cluster went completely blank. I stopped but left it turned on, and within 10 seconds the idle went way back up to normal, screen came back on and everything felt like it should. Minus the check engine light that came on but soon went away. Turned my heated grips back on, turned the headlights back on and everything was good to go. Kind of a head scratcher.

About an hour later we found another spot we messed around in, couple donuts in the snow, didn’t beat on it too hard just goofed around a bit. Well same thing as before started happening but not as bad. Head lights got dimmer, around 9.5-10.5 volts reading on the cluster. We stopped to take a picture with the group and when we wanted to leave my wheeler wouldn’t start again. Went back under by the battery and cleared the snow off of it and around it. Took a few mins but it decided to start eventually. Went back up to normal after a little riding.

I guess my question is-is my battery already junk after 6 months? I had my wheeler submerged in water up past the foot wells a handful of times last summer and never had this issue. So I can’t foresee the snow/water on the battery being the problem shorting it out?

Does anyone know of a cover or a boot for the battery that could prevent this? (Still can’t imagine why Polaris put the battery there in the 570s…)

Sorry about the extremely long post, just trying to provide as much info as possible. Thanks in advance for any help
