Hello from arkansas

Hello all from arkansas. Just got given by my guess an early 2000s kodiak for free that I’m working on and looking for some answers. Nothing else I’ll part it out and come out ahead on the mile marker winch and tires on the thing but I really want to get it running to give my dad. All I know is its ugly red (I’m gonna camo wrap it for him), has a solid rear axle, and some aftermarket mud/trail looking tires.

I literally picked it up from an old lady whose just deceased husband had parked it some time back because he got a side by side. It would crank and barely run because of the old gas in it. I got the gas flushed out enough to get it running but it started electrical smoking from under the seat and I shut it off. Seems the CDI is toast now so I’m looking for one of those cheap. The sitting under an open shed for years didn’t do it any favors.

My only gripe about it is they chopped and welded the racks up with some 1/2 x 1/2 square tube and extended metal to hold some dog boxes. Thankfully no plastic cutting done. The front just looks cobbled but when they done the rear with poor planning the rear seat didn’t fit back on it so they just sit it where it sit and rode there. I’m hoping to just scrap those and replace with some factory ones. The rear for sure, the front as money allows.

Sorry no pictures as right now I’m in bed due to just getting out of the hospital myself for a surgery that has me on light duty. As soon as I’m back on my feet better I’ll start a thread and post pictures. Dad is already mad at me because the lady gave it to me so I’m hoping to have it running good enough for him to "borrow" for deer season then have it totally finished for his b-day in march.

I guess a bit about me. I’m 36, disabled due to an uncommon (not rare) GI problem. I used to be a working electrician and have been a shade tree mechanic since dad got tired of me pestering him and had me building carbs at 8 y/o. I’m not new to mud ridding but I stick to trucks. I have a 87 v8 s10 blazer sitting on 1 ton axles that was my money pit when I was a usable member of society making a weekly check. We have 90 acres with 3 ponds and 2 creeks we play on when it’s not hunting season. The rest of the time it’s the blind leading the blind since my disabled dad (back problems) and me fight and watch over each other. Now my 9 year old son is getting into anything with gas fumes so I’m getting to see what my dad did when I started turning wrenches. The boy is restoring a 1960s mini bike right now as his project so our shop is full.

Sorry for the novel, I’m sure I’ll get enough TLDR:nana:
