I just did the shim mod on my 09 grizz 550. I put black diamond atr radials on and I ride here in MT at 4000-8000 ft on average. The heavy tires caused a lot of power loss.
I consider myself an ok mechanic but pretty conservative and don’t do much technical stuff, usually just routine maintenance.
I added 1.5 mm of shim and thought it was hitting the cover. I had plenty of splines so I hit the inside of the cover a bit with some rough scotchbrite on a die grinder.
I feel a difference on the low end. Nothing super but I would describe it as similar to the power I had before adding heavy tires. I don’t think I lost any top end. I might have but I still hit 50 which is about as fast as I ever went before. I would say it is definitely worth the $10 and hour or two of time it took.
